Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding J-1 Visa Sponsorship as a Travel Registered Nurse
Verify your CGFNS credentials before applying
Most J-1 host hospitals require internationally educated nurses to hold CGFNS certification or a NCLEX-RN pass before they'll engage a sponsor. Complete this credentialing step early so delays don't stall your DS-2019 issuance.
Match your program category to career stage
The Trainee category applies if you graduated within the past 12 months or have under one year of U.S. experience. Beyond that threshold, the Research Scholar or Specialist category is more appropriate. Selecting the wrong category causes the DS-2019 to be rejected.
Search Migrate Mate for J-1 host employers
Not every travel nursing agency or hospital system is willing to coordinate with a J-1 sponsor organization. Use Migrate Mate to find host employers already familiar with exchange visitor placements before you start outreach.
Ask host employers about 2-year home residency waivers
Nurses from countries with a skills shortage on the DOL exchange visitor skills list are subject to the 2-year home residency requirement. Confirm with your sponsor and host whether a Conrad State 30 or interested government agency waiver applies to your situation.
Confirm the training plan covers your specialty unit
Your J-1 program requires a signed Training Plan, Form DS-7002, that maps your exchange activities to specific clinical objectives. Hospitals that operate ICU, NICU, or telemetry units often need to tailor this document, so review it with your sponsor before your host countersigns.
Understand SEVIS fee and visa timing
After your sponsor issues the DS-2019, you pay the SEVIS fee, then schedule your consular interview. Budget at least 8 to 12 weeks between DS-2019 issuance and your intended start date to absorb consulate scheduling delays common for nursing placements.

Find Travel Registered Nurse JobsTravel Registered Nurse J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category covers Travel Registered Nurses?
Most Travel Registered Nurses enter under the Trainee category if they graduated within the past 12 months or have limited U.S. work history. Nurses with more substantial post-graduation experience who are pursuing specialized clinical exchange programs may qualify under the Specialist or Research Scholar category instead. Your State Department-designated sponsor confirms the correct classification based on your credentials and program objectives.
Who actually sponsors a Travel Registered Nurse for a J-1 visa?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not your employing hospital. Organizations such as ECFMG, CIEE, or Cultural Vistas issue the DS-2019 form, file with SEVIS, and monitor program compliance. The host hospital or travel nursing agency is the placement site, not the legal sponsor. You need both a willing host and an approved designated sponsor to proceed.
Does the 2-year home residency requirement apply to J-1 nurses?
It depends on your country of nationality and whether nursing appears on the DOL exchange visitor skills list for that country. If it does, you must return home for two years after your J-1 ends before you can apply for an H-1B or green card. A Conrad State 30 waiver or interested government agency waiver can eliminate this requirement if a qualifying employer sponsors the request, but securing one takes time and is not guaranteed.
How do I find U.S. hospitals that work with J-1 exchange visitors?
Not every travel nursing agency or hospital coordinates with J-1 designated sponsors, so identifying willing host employers is one of the harder steps. Migrate Mate lets you filter for U.S. employers that are familiar with exchange visitor placements, narrowing your outreach to organizations already set up to host J-1 nurses rather than spending weeks on cold outreach to employers who may say no.
Can I transfer to an H-1B visa after my J-1 Travel RN placement ends?
Yes, if you are not subject to the 2-year home residency requirement or have obtained a waiver. Your host employer would need to file an H-1B petition, and you would need to meet specialty occupation criteria for the RN role, which some USCIS adjudicators scrutinize closely. Nurses working in advanced practice or highly specialized units tend to have an easier time demonstrating specialty occupation status than those in general medical-surgical roles.
