Verify your credential equivalency early
U.S. radiology training programs expect credentials aligned with ARRT or equivalent national standards. Have your transcripts evaluated by a NACES-approved credential assessment agency before approaching host sites, so gaps in equivalency don't stall your DS-2019 issuance.
Match your J-1 category to your career stage
If you're still completing a degree, the Intern category applies. Practicing RPA professionals with post-graduation experience fit the Trainee category, which allows up to 18 months in a structured clinical training plan approved by your designated sponsor.
Target host sites with existing J-1 infrastructure
Academic medical centers and large hospital systems already maintain relationships with designated J-1 sponsors and have compliance officers familiar with training plan requirements. Use Migrate Mate to identify radiology departments at institutions with active J-1 hosting history.
Build a training plan before outreach
Designated sponsors require a detailed training plan outlining your specific radiology competencies, supervision structure, and learning objectives. Drafting this document before contacting host sites accelerates sponsor review and signals that you understand the program's compliance requirements.
Confirm the two-year home residency rule with your sponsor
Some RPA professionals from countries with J-1 skills list designations or who receive government funding face a two-year home residency requirement after program completion. Your designated sponsor reviews your DS-2019 application to determine whether this requirement applies before you accept any offer.
Clarify wage compliance obligations with the host site
Your host employer must pay J-1 trainees the prevailing wage for the radiology role and location. Cross-check the offered compensation against the OFLC Wage Search tool before signing your training agreement to ensure DOL wage standards are met.

Find Radiology Practitioner Assistant JobsRadiology Practitioner Assistant J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category fits a Radiology Practitioner Assistant?
Most RPA professionals qualify under the J-1 Trainee category, which is designed for foreign nationals with a degree or professional certificate and at least one year of relevant work experience outside the United States. Current students completing a radiology degree may qualify under the Intern category instead. Your designated sponsor makes the final category determination based on your credentials and training objectives.
Who actually sponsors the J-1 visa for an RPA role?
The visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, not the hospital or imaging center where you work. The designated sponsor issues your DS-2019 form, approves your training plan, and monitors program compliance throughout your placement. Common designated sponsors for clinical and health science trainees include CIEE, Cultural Vistas, and similar State Department-approved organizations. The radiology department is your host, not your sponsor.
How do I find U.S. radiology host sites open to J-1 trainees?
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers in radiology and medical imaging that have posted roles aligned with J-1 sponsorship. Filtering by institution type helps narrow results to academic medical centers and large health systems, which are most likely to have existing designated sponsor relationships and the compliance infrastructure needed to support a J-1 training program.
Does the J-1 Trainee category have a time limit for RPA placements?
Yes. The J-1 Trainee category carries a maximum program duration of 18 months for most fields, including health-related disciplines like radiology. Extensions beyond 18 months are not available under the Trainee category. If your training objectives require longer exposure, your designated sponsor can advise on whether a Research Scholar or other category better fits your situation before you finalize your training plan.
Can a J-1 RPA trainee transition to an H-1B or other work visa afterward?
Transitioning from J-1 to H-1B is possible if you are not subject to the two-year home residency requirement, or if you obtain a waiver of that requirement. RPA professionals whose home country appears on the State Department skills list or who received government funding may be subject to the requirement. Confirm your status with your designated sponsor before counting on an immediate status change after your J-1 program ends.
