Verify your credentials meet U.S. nursing standards
Before applying, confirm your nursing license is eligible for U.S. state endorsement and that your clinical research experience is documented in a format U.S. academic medical centers recognize. CGFNS credential evaluation is frequently required by host institutions.
Distinguish Research Scholar from Trainee category eligibility
The Research Scholar category fits nurses conducting independent clinical research. The Trainee category suits those in structured training programs under direct supervision. Applying through the wrong category can delay or invalidate your DS-2019 issuance.
Target academic medical centers with active IRB-approved studies
Host sites for clinical research nurses almost always operate under Institutional Review Board oversight. Prioritize hospitals and research institutes with active federally funded trials, as these sites have established J-1 host agreements with designated sponsor organizations.
Search J-1-compatible roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter U.S. clinical research nursing roles by employers that have hosted J-1 exchange visitors before. This narrows your search to organizations already familiar with the DS-2019 process and host-site obligations.
Prepare your training plan before contacting host sites
Designated sponsor organizations require a detailed Training/Internship Placement Plan before issuing a DS-2019. Draft your clinical research objectives, supervision structure, and learning milestones in advance so host sites can review and co-sign quickly.
Clarify the two-year home residency requirement with your sponsor
Research Scholar and Trainee participants in government-funded fields may be subject to the two-year home residency requirement under INA section 212(e). Ask your designated sponsor organization to assess your specific situation before accepting a host offer.

Find Clinical Research Nurse JobsClinical Research Nurse J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 program category applies to clinical research nurses?
Most clinical research nurses enter under the Research Scholar or Trainee category. Research Scholar fits nurses leading or contributing to independent research at an academic medical center or research institute. Trainee fits those in a supervised, structured program building clinical research competencies. Your designated sponsor organization, not your host employer, determines which category applies based on your qualifications and program design.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa as a clinical research nurse?
Your J-1 visa sponsor is a U.S. Department of State-designated organization, such as IIE, CIEE, or Cultural Vistas, that issues your DS-2019 form and monitors your exchange program compliance. The hospital or research institute where you work is your host site, not your legal sponsor. This distinction matters when reviewing program obligations and the two-year home residency requirement.
How do I find U.S. employers that will host a J-1 clinical research nurse?
Use Migrate Mate to search for clinical research nursing roles at U.S. employers that have prior experience hosting J-1 exchange visitors. Academic medical centers, NIH-affiliated research programs, and NCI-designated cancer centers are common host sites. Demonstrating that you have identified a willing host significantly speeds up the DS-2019 issuance process with your designated sponsor.
Does the two-year home residency requirement apply to clinical research nurses on J-1?
It can, depending on your home country's designation and whether your exchange is government-funded. Nurses from countries on the State Department's Exchange Visitor Skills List, or whose programs are financed by a U.S. or home-country government agency, are typically subject to the INA section 212(e) two-year requirement before changing to most other U.S. visa categories. Your designated sponsor organization assesses this before issuing your DS-2019.
What documents does a host site need before co-signing a J-1 training plan?
Host institutions typically need your CV with clinical research experience documented by study phase and therapeutic area, evidence of your nursing credentials and any CGFNS or equivalency evaluation, and a draft training or research plan outlining your objectives, supervision arrangements, and duration. Some academic medical centers also require IRB documentation confirming your role on an approved protocol before co-signing the Training/Internship Placement Plan with the designated sponsor.
