Verify your O*NET classification before applying
User Experience Researcher maps to SOC code 15-2051 in O*NET. Confirm this before your host employer drafts a training plan, since the designated sponsor uses your occupation code to validate program eligibility and DS-2019 issuance.
Distinguish Research Scholar from Specialist eligibility
Research Scholar status requires a university or research institute as your host. Specialist status fits industry labs and corporate UX research teams. Your career stage and host type determine which category your designated sponsor will approve on your DS-2019.
Build a portfolio that documents research methodology
Designated sponsors reviewing your application need evidence of substantive research activity. Include usability study protocols, synthesis decks, and participant recruitment plans alongside final deliverables to show your work qualifies as exchange research, not routine product work.
Search Migrate Mate to find J-1-aligned UX research roles
Not every employer understands the host-organization requirements for J-1 placements. Migrate Mate filters U.S. UX research roles by sponsorship compatibility, so you can target companies already familiar with the DS-2019 process and designated sponsor coordination.
Request a training plan review before accepting an offer
Your host employer must submit a detailed Training or Internship Placement Plan to the designated sponsor before your DS-2019 is issued. Ask the employer to draft this document early so sponsorship delays don't push back your start date.
Check whether the two-year home residency requirement applies to you
If your J-1 program is government-funded or your home country lists your field on its skills list, the two-year home residency requirement attaches to your status. Confirm this with your designated sponsor before negotiating a post-program employment timeline.

Find User Experience Researcher JobsUser Experience Researcher J-1 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which J-1 category fits a User Experience Researcher role?
It depends on your career stage and host organization. Current graduate students typically qualify under the Intern or Research Scholar category when hosted by a university lab. Mid-career researchers placed at a corporate research team usually qualify under Specialist. Your State Department-designated sponsor reviews your specific situation and determines the appropriate category before issuing the DS-2019.
Who actually sponsors my J-1 visa, the employer or a separate organization?
A State Department-designated sponsor organization issues your DS-2019 and holds legal responsibility for your exchange program. The hiring company is your host employer, not your visa sponsor. Organizations like IIE, Cultural Vistas, and CIEE administer this role for research and specialist programs. The employer and the designated sponsor must coordinate on your training plan and program compliance.
How do I find U.S. employers who understand the J-1 host-organization requirements for UX research roles?
Many employers are unfamiliar with the documentation they need to provide as a J-1 host, including the Training or Internship Placement Plan and coordination with a designated sponsor. Migrate Mate helps you identify U.S. companies posting UX research roles with J-1 sponsorship compatibility, so you spend less time educating employers about the process from scratch.
Does the two-year home residency requirement affect UX researchers on J-1 visas?
It can. The two-year home residency requirement applies if your J-1 program is funded by a U.S. or foreign government, or if your home country has designated your field on its exchange visitor skills list. If it applies, you must return home for two years before changing to most other U.S. visa categories. Your designated sponsor can confirm whether it attaches to your specific program before you finalize your placement.
What documentation should I prepare before a host employer submits my J-1 training plan?
Gather your academic transcripts, degree certificates, and any published research or documented UX study outputs before the employer drafts your Training or Internship Placement Plan. The designated sponsor reviews these to confirm your qualifications match the program objectives. Usability study protocols, research synthesis examples, and participant recruitment documentation all strengthen the case that your placement constitutes genuine exchange research activity.
