Mid Level Journalist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a mid level journalist job?
Position yourself around ownership rather than participation: highlight bylines where you drove a story from source to publication, beats you managed independently, or coverage areas you built from scratch. Tailor your portfolio to show editorial judgment, not just output volume. Applications that demonstrate you can run assignments with limited oversight, and that show audience impact through engagement metrics or awards, stand out at this level.
Which companies hire mid level journalists?
Companies hiring mid level journalists right now include The New York Times and Nexstar Media Group, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Hiring at this level comes from a broad mix of legacy publishers, digital-native outlets, broadcast networks, and corporate communications teams building in-house editorial capacity.
Are there remote mid level journalist jobs?
Yes, remote and hybrid options are common at this level. About 20% of mid level journalist openings are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how many newsrooms and content teams have restructured around distributed editorial workflows since the pandemic. Fully on-site roles still exist, particularly in broadcast and daily news environments.
How do I move up to a mid level journalist role?
The path from entry level to mid level is built through progressive ownership: start by filing consistently on deadline, then push to take on longer-form or more investigative work, claim a beat, and start mentoring newer contributors. Editors notice reporters who anticipate story angles, develop reliable sources independently, and deliver work that needs fewer revisions over time. Measurable impact, such as high-traffic stories or award recognition, accelerates that progression.
Which industries hire the most mid level journalists?
Mid level journalist roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Media & Entertainment, and Marketing & Advertising, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. These sectors drive consistent demand because they need experienced editorial staff who can produce credible, audience-focused content with limited supervision across fast-moving news cycles or specialized subject areas.
