Machine Learning Engineer Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a machine learning engineer in Massachusetts?
Machine learning engineering has no state-issued license in Massachusetts, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Most Massachusetts employers expect at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, or engineering, and many prefer a master's or doctoral degree for research-heavy roles. Building a portfolio of real projects, contributing to open-source work, and completing internships with Massachusetts technology, biotech, or defense firms are the most reliable ways to move from study into a full-time role.
How much do machine learning engineers make in Massachusetts?
Machine learning engineers in Massachusetts earn a median of about $165,210 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $102,810 for the lowest 10% to over $213,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire machine learning engineers in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring machine learning engineers in Massachusetts right now include Wayfair, Lila Sciences, and Whoop, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's deep concentration of research hospitals, defense contractors, and life sciences firms means ML roles here often blend domain-specific data science with core software engineering.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most machine learning engineer jobs?
Boston, Cambridge, and Waltham hold the most machine learning engineer openings in Massachusetts. Boston and Cambridge dominate because of the dense cluster of universities, hospitals, and technology firms in those metros, while suburban Route 128 corridor communities contribute significantly through major defense and analytics employers with long-established campuses there.
Are there remote machine learning engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of machine learning engineer openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally suited the work is to distributed teams. Roles focused on model research, data pipeline development, and experimentation tend to be the most remote-friendly, while positions requiring hands-on access to proprietary hardware or sensitive data are more likely to require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a machine learning engineer in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a graduate or associate ML engineer role at a large Massachusetts employer with structured early-career programs, such as the technology divisions of Mass General Brigham, MathWorks, or defense firms in the Route 128 corridor. Candidates transitioning from adjacent roles like data analyst, software developer, or quantitative researcher have a strong foothold. A public portfolio of end-to-end projects, a completed master's degree, or a graduate research position at a Massachusetts university gives early-career applicants a clear advantage in the hiring process.
Where can I find and apply to machine learning engineer jobs in Massachusetts?
You can find and apply to machine learning engineer jobs in Massachusetts on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
