INTRODUCTION
Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, Virginia is seeking a medical director of a new pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) service line. A successful candidate must exhibit strong leadership and administrative skills along with excellent clinical acumen. The cardiac surgery program at CHKD is rapidly growing. As such, the successful candidate must illustrate a vision to develop a multidisciplinary team and infrastructure providing comprehensive care for children with congenital heart disease.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To be eligible for consideration, the candidate must hold one of the following; Board-certification in Pediatric Critical Care, dual boarded in both Pediatric Critical Care and Cardiology or Board-certification in Pediatric Cardiology. Candidates must be currently practicing full time and have a minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU).
Currently, cardiac patients are managed in the pediatric intensive care unit at CHKD, the only free-standing and independent children’s hospital in the Commonwealth of Virginia, consisting of 32 beds with an average daily census of 19. Averaging 1200 admissions per year with a nearly 50/50 split between medical and surgical patients, we care for the full spectrum of severely ill and injured children using a multidisciplinary approach. Together with Eastern Virginia Medical School, CSG and CHKD operate the largest pediatric residency training program in Virginia. Our team consists of dedicated residents, clinical pharmacists, nutritionists, social workers, chaplains, child life specialists, discharge coordinators, respiratory therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians. The current critical care coverage model consists of two daytime teams (general critical care and cardiac intensive care), 8 FTE Board-certified/eligible pediatric intensivists, and 4 APPs. The cardiology division has the largest practice in the state of Virginia. Furthermore, this group has subspecialty cardiologists in interventional cardiology (2), electrophysiology (1), fetal (2), adult congenital heart disease (2), advanced imaging (1), and pulmonary hypertension (1).
CHKD’s cardiac surgery program is part of a regional collaborative between CHKD and the University of Virginia (UVA), referred to as the Virginia Congenital Cardiac Collaborative. The CHKD program is supported by surgeons with over 50 years of experience, in Dr. Umar Boston (Chief of Cardiac Surgery, CHKD) and Dr. Phillip Smith (Surgical Director of the Fetal Care Center). Currently, 100 index cardiac surgery cases are performed each year. The planned growth with the new CICU service line is to achieve approximately 200 cases per year. CHKD has committed to establishing a dedicated CICU service line. This commitment also includes the building of a new CICU in the 1st quarter of 2026. The successful candidate will join an established group of surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, physician extenders, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and other health care providers to provide comprehensive care with the shared goal of creating a center of excellence.
