Overview
The Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is seeking a pediatric nephrologist at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to join their diverse and highly productive team. The Division includes a large outpatient clinical service with specialty clinics in hypertension, bone/mineral disorders, and genetic disorders, in addition to a nationally recognized end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) program with a home hemodialysis program, one of the lowest dialysis infection rates and one of the nation’s best graft survival rates. A busy acute kidney injury program and a collaborative transition program with adult nephrology care are additional noteworthy clinical components of the Division.
Our team of providers includes 10 Nephrology faculty with appointments at either the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine or the University of Kansas School of Medicine, 3 dietitians, 2 social workers, a psychologist, 6 transplant coordinators, 7 nurse practitioners, 6 research coordinators, a child life specialist and nursing personnel in clinic and dialysis with 100% effort dedicated to Nephrology.
We have an active fellowship program and we are engaged in basic, translational and clinical research in the areas of chronic kidney disease/ESKD, acute kidney injury, bone/ mineral disorders, kidney stones, nephrotic syndrome, and genetics supported by a nephrology laboratory located in the new 375,000 sq.ft. Children’s Mercy Research Institute (CMRI) and both internal and external (industry, NIH) funding. We have been ranked as one of the 10 best Pediatric Nephrology programs by US News and World Report over the past 13 consecutive years.
Compensation and academic rank will be determined commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities:
- Provides quality clinical care to patients.
- Provides education to physicians, students, and allied health
- Participates in scholarly activities that contribute to medical knowledge
- Participates in administrative activities and promotes fiscal responsibility
- Acts as a clinical resource and consultant for the Occupational Health Services staff when needed in matters pertaining to:
- Key strategies for staff medical surveillance; including disease immunity, respiratory protection, state and federal regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA, TJC, KDHE)
- Protocols to prevent or respond to bloodborne, airborne, and other staff exposures due to biological hazards
- Assessing patient risk factors and workability for staff with personal potentially infectious illnesses
- Interpretation of abnormal diagnostic lab/radiology findings (e.g., TB chest x-rays)
- Review of employee requests for medical accommodation to exempt required vaccinations
- Risks associated with specific workplace safety hazards (e.g., indoor air quality)
- Development/review of protocols to address risks specific to Animal Research
- Professional opinions regarding employee fitness for duty (personal health conditions that may affect work performance)
- The modification or development of clinical services and guidelines for Occupational Health Services
- Complex employee events such as HIV exposures, hazardous drug exposures, disease outbreaks
- Collaborates with the Occupational Health team and provides insight into development of organizational safety goals
- Reviews and approves updated OHS policies along with Occupational Health Director and the Infection Control Medical Director
- Annually review and authorize standing orders for employee vaccinations and post-exposure prophylaxis
- Actively participates as needed on organizational committees as a representative of OHS, providing support, insight and interface (e.g., Infection Prevention and Control Committee)
