You’ll own end-to-end delivery: ingestion, retrieval, agent orchestration, evaluation, and deployment.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the team to design and develop high quality Web applications using Python, Flask, Django, and related technologies.
- Write clean and efficient code, and ensure code maintainability and reusability.
- Design and implement RAG pipelines on Google Cloud / Vertex AI (chunking, embeddings, indexing, retrieval, reranking, grounding).
- Build agentic workflows (tool use, planning, reflection/guardrails, structured outputs) using Python-first frameworks.
- Perform code reviews to ensure code quality and consistency.
- Conduct testing to ensure application quality and reliability.
- Create and maintain technical documentation for web applications.
- Participate in project planning, estimation, and prioritization.

- Ship to production: APIs, monitoring/observability, cost/performance optimization, CI/CD, and security best practices.
Qualifications
- Experience in software development in Python3.
- Decent understanding of the software development/testing life cycle.
- Knowledge of relational databases (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc).
- Experience with version control tools, such as Git.
- Experience building RAG solutions (hybrid search, reranking, chunking strategies, embeddings, prompt + schema design).
- Familiar with at least one agentic framework (e.g., LangGraph/LangChain, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen) and tool/function calling patterns.
- Solid knowledge of vector search concepts and at least one vector DB in production.
- Strong engineering practices: code reviews, testing, telemetry, secure-by-design, reliability mindset.
Preferred Skills
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
- 1+ year professional experience in Python web application development with either Flask or Django.
- Experience in RESTful API development in Python.
- Understanding of Python web application frameworks such as Flask or Django.
- Experience with Cloud services, such as AWS.
- Experience with Vertex AI and GCP fundamentals (IAM, logging/monitoring, CloudRun/GKE, storage).
- Knowledge graphs for RAG (entity linking, graph traversal + retrieval fusion).
- Streaming/messaging (Pub/Sub, Kafka), document pipelines (Document AI), and multilingual retrieval.
- Experience with evaluation tooling (RAGAS, TruLens, custom eval harnesses), prompt/version management.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as an AI Consultant
Lead with your STEM OPT extension
When reaching out to employers, mention upfront that your degree qualifies for the 24-month STEM extension. This gives employers a three-year runway before H-1B visa sponsorship is required, which removes a major objection before it surfaces.
Target consulting firms with established OPT pipelines
Large consulting firms that already employ international staff have immigration counsel on retainer and streamlined sponsorship processes. Firms with existing OPT hires understand the timeline and are far less likely to treat your status as a dealbreaker.
Align your degree field with the role description
AI Consultant roles require a clear connection between your academic background and the position. A degree in computer science, machine learning, or data science strengthens your specialty occupation case. Highlight relevant coursework and projects that map directly to the job.
Raise sponsorship before the offer stage
Waiting until you have an offer to discuss work authorization wastes everyone's time. Bring it up after a strong first or second interview, framing it as a logistics question rather than a burden. Prepared employers appreciate transparency early.
Document your AI project portfolio
AI Consultant roles often require demonstrating applied expertise beyond academic credentials. Maintain a portfolio of deployed models, client-facing projects, or published work. Concrete deliverables help employers justify sponsorship internally to legal and HR teams.
Understand your OPT start date and employer reporting obligations
OPT employment must be reported to your DSO within 10 days of starting. Ensure your offer letter specifies a start date that aligns with your EAD validity. Gaps or unreported changes can jeopardize your status and complicate future H-1B filings.
AI Consultant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an AI Consultant role qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
Yes, in most cases. AI Consultant positions typically fall under CIP codes in computer science, data science, or information technology, all of which appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. Your employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify, which most established consulting firms already are. Confirm your specific degree CIP code with your DSO before applying for the extension.
How do I find AI Consultant jobs where employers are open to OPT sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters employers by sponsorship history, so you are not wasting applications on companies that will not hire international candidates. Searching there surfaces AI Consultant roles at firms with a demonstrated track record of filing H-1B petitions, which is a strong proxy for OPT-friendliness.
Can I work as an independent AI Consultant on OPT?
Self-employment is not permitted on standard OPT. Your work authorization requires a qualifying employer-employee relationship, meaning you need a formal employer who controls the terms of your work. Independent contracting or freelancing arrangements do not satisfy this requirement and could put your immigration status at risk.
What happens to my OPT status if my AI Consultant contract ends before my EAD expires?
OPT allows up to 90 days of unemployment on standard OPT and up to 150 days on the STEM extension, cumulative across the entire post-completion period. If your contract ends, you have that window to secure a new qualifying position. Staying beyond those limits jeopardizes your status, so tracking your unemployment days from day one is critical.
Do AI Consultant roles at staffing agencies or consulting firms count as qualifying OPT employment?
Yes, provided the work is directly related to your degree field. Third-party placement arrangements are permitted on OPT as long as there is a clear employer of record who controls your work and is E-Verify enrolled for STEM extension purposes. The practical connection between the AI consulting work and your academic background must be documentable for your DSO records.
