How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Brazer
Confirm your OPT employment authorization before applying
Your EAD card must be valid before your first day of work. Apply to USCIS at least 90 days before your intended start date and verify the employer understands you need active authorization, not just an approved application, to begin.
Target manufacturers with established OPT hiring experience
Large aerospace, HVAC, and industrial manufacturers hire brazers regularly and often have HR teams familiar with employment authorization paperwork. Smaller shops may be willing but lack the administrative experience to onboard OPT workers smoothly without guidance from you.
Clarify whether the role supports STEM OPT extension
Brazer roles at companies with accredited E-Verify enrollment may qualify for a 24-month STEM extension if your degree is in a STEM field. Confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify before accepting an offer, as this directly affects how long you can stay.
Document the direct connection between your degree and the role
OPT requires your job to be directly related to your degree field. Mechanical engineering, materials science, and manufacturing technology degrees have clear ties to brazing work. Prepare a short written explanation linking your coursework to the technical skills the role requires.
Ask about H-2B or H-1B sponsorship timelines early
OPT is temporary. During your first few months, have an honest conversation with your employer about long-term visa options. Manufacturers who value skilled brazers sometimes sponsor H-2B or H-1B petitions, but the process takes time, so starting early matters significantly.
Keep your DSO updated on any job or employer changes
If you change worksites, switch to a different employer, or take on contract work through a staffing agency, report it to your Designated School Official immediately. Unreported changes to your OPT employment can create serious status violations that are difficult to correct later.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students legally work as brazers in the United States?
Yes, F-1 OPT students can work as brazers as long as the role is directly related to their field of study and their EAD card is valid before the start date. Degrees in mechanical engineering, manufacturing technology, materials science, or related fields typically satisfy the direct relationship requirement that USCIS expects.
Is a brazer role considered STEM for the purposes of OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title itself. The STEM OPT extension is based on whether your degree appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Mechanical engineering, materials engineering, and manufacturing engineering degrees commonly qualify. Your employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify for the extension to be approved.
How do I find brazer employers who are comfortable hiring OPT workers?
Browse Migrate Mate to find brazer and manufacturing roles posted by employers who are open to OPT candidates. Searching there filters out much of the noise and connects you with companies that already understand work authorization requirements, saving you time on cold applications to employers unfamiliar with the OPT process.
Can I work as a brazer through a staffing agency while on OPT?
Yes, but the arrangement requires careful documentation. The staffing agency is technically your employer of record and must be listed on your EAD. The end client worksite must also be consistent with your authorized employment. Inform your DSO before starting any staffing agency placement to ensure your OPT record reflects the correct employer information.
What happens to my OPT status if my brazer job ends before my EAD expires?
You have a cumulative 90-day unemployment allowance during standard OPT, which extends to 150 days if you have an approved STEM extension. Days without authorized employment count against this limit. If you exceed it, your OPT status is considered violated. Start your next job search immediately and notify your DSO when employment ends.
