How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Sewing
Connect your degree to the role explicitly
Employers in apparel and textile manufacturing may not know OPT rules. Be ready to explain that your fashion design, apparel technology, or textile degree directly authorizes this work and that you require no petitions or fees from them upfront.
Target small apparel studios and costume shops
Small production studios, theatrical costume departments, and independent ateliers hire skilled sewers regularly. They often have fewer HR layers, making it easier to have a direct conversation about your OPT work authorization without getting filtered by an automated system.
Document the degree-to-role connection clearly
On your resume and cover letter, name your specific program, such as Fashion Design or Textile Engineering, and tie it directly to the sewing tasks in the job description. This removes ambiguity for hiring managers unfamiliar with F-1 OPT employment rules.
Apply before your OPT start date, not after
Start applying two to three months before your EAD card arrives. Employers can extend an offer contingent on authorization, and you cannot legally begin work until your OPT start date. Early outreach prevents gaps and shows employers you plan ahead responsibly.
Ask about future H-1B sponsorship in the second conversation
Sewing and production roles at larger apparel companies or manufacturers can qualify as specialty occupations with a degree requirement. Ask about long-term sponsorship possibilities after you have demonstrated your skills, not during the first interview when it raises uncertainty.
Highlight technical skills that are harder to offshore
Pattern grading, industrial machine operation, and quality inspection are valued in U.S. production environments. Emphasizing specialized, hands-on technical skills makes you a stronger candidate and reduces an employer's hesitation about navigating your OPT authorization for the first time.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do sewing jobs qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, if the role is directly related to your degree field. A student in Fashion Design, Apparel Production, or Textile Technology can work in sewing or garment construction under OPT. The connection must be genuine and documentable. A general labor sewing job unrelated to your degree program would not qualify and could jeopardize your status.
Can I work part time in a sewing role on pre-completion OPT?
Yes. On pre-completion OPT, you are limited to 20 hours per week while school is in session, but you can work full time during official school breaks. Post-completion OPT requires full-time employment, meaning at least 20 hours per week, to satisfy the unemployment reporting requirements and avoid violating your status.
Where can I find sewing jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship and work authorization type, making it far easier to identify employers already open to hiring OPT candidates in sewing and apparel roles without having to ask the question awkwardly during every application.
Does the STEM OPT 24-month extension apply to sewing or apparel degrees?
No. The STEM OPT extension only applies to degrees in fields on the official DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Fashion design, apparel production, and most textile programs are not on that list. You are limited to the standard 12-month OPT period unless your specific degree program is STEM-designated, which you can verify with your DSO.
What happens to my OPT status if I am unemployed between sewing jobs?
Post-completion OPT allows a cumulative unemployment limit of 90 days for a standard 12-month period. If you exceed this, your OPT authorization is automatically terminated. Track your unemployment days carefully, report any job changes to your DSO within the required window, and keep documentation showing active job searching during any gap periods.
