Key Responsibilities
- Uses professional judgment to adapt imaging procedures to ensure quality diagnostic outcomes.
- Selects the most appropriate and cost-effective action plan after reviewing all pertinent data and assessing the patient’s abilities and condition.
- Selects appropriate shielding devices and appropriate immobilization devices.
- Evaluates lab values prior to administering contrast media or radioactive isotopes.
- Performs venipuncture, IV patency and maintenance according to established guidelines.
- Administers radioactive materials and or contrast agents according to established guidelines.
- Observes patient and equipment during procedures, documents patient reactions or problems on requisitions and reports immediately to supervisor.
- Reconfirms patient identification using two unique identifiers (Name and DOB) and verifies procedure requested. Verifies female patient pregnancy status when appropriate.
- Assesses factors that may contraindicate the procedure, such as medications or insufficient patient preparation.
- Documents patient and exam occurrences in PACS/RIS to include exam start complete times.
Qualifications
- Demonstrates a high degree of knowledge in Nuclear Medicine and in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to include knowledge and abilities in basic and complex diagnostic NM and PET procedures.
- Abilities and knowledge in managing a patient care environment with increased exposure to infectious diseases, carcinogens and radiation.
- Knowledge of Computerized Tomography imaging procedures and technology to include knowledge of specifications, standards, and tolerances for the operation of CT equipment.
Education
Graduate of a Nuclear Medicine Technology program.
Certification/Licensure
- Current registration and licensure by the Arizona Department of Health Services (AZDHS).
- Current registration and licensure by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) in Nuclear Medicine (NM) or Current Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) certification.
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
Preferences
Education preferred from an accredited program for Nuclear Medicine Technology via ARRT or Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist via NMTCB.
Work Requirements
- Ability to safely lift and physically manipulate patients.
- Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to analyze and apply theory to practice skills.
- Standing and walking for periods of 2 hours or longer.
- Possible exposure to blood product and radiation.
- Lifting equipment up to 50lbs, and pushing equipment up to 150lbs and assisting with the movement of an adult patient weighing up to 300lbs.
- Concentration, visual and auditory acuity for watching monitors and following instructions during procedures.
