Tips for Your Pet Groomer Job Search
List every breed you groom confidently
Hiring managers scan for specific breeds, especially high-maintenance coats like doodles, schnauzers, and poodles. Include the breeds you groom most often and any breed-specific techniques you've mastered, not just a generic 'all breeds' claim.
Get your certifications listed upfront
Certifications from the National Dog Groomers Association of America or International Professional Groomers signal commitment to safety and technique. Put them in your resume header, not buried at the bottom, so a scan of the page surfaces them immediately.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists pet groomer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Match your resume to the salon's clientele
A mobile grooming operation wants proof you handle anxious dogs calmly in tight spaces. A high-volume retail salon needs speed and throughput. Read the job post closely and lead with the experience that matches their actual workflow, not a one-size resume.
Bring a portfolio to your working interview
Most grooming employers ask you to groom a dog during the interview. Bring before-and-after photos of past work on your phone, organized by coat type. It lets you demonstrate your eye for finish quality even before you pick up the scissors.
Negotiate on booking volume, not just pay
At commission-based salons, your earning potential depends on how many dogs you're booked per shift. Ask specifically how many appointments the previous groomer carried and whether you build your own client book or inherit one before you accept an offer.
Pet Groomer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How many pet groomer jobs are remote?
About 0% of pet groomer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is low compared to most roles because hands-on animal handling is central to the work. The exceptions tend to be grooming educator positions, online training instructors, and salon management or scheduling roles that don't require direct client-pet contact.
How do you become a pet groomer?
Start by completing a professional grooming program at a vocational school, grooming academy, or through an apprenticeship under an experienced groomer. Build hands-on hours bathing and drying pets, then progress to scissor and clipper work under supervision. Pursue certification from a recognized body like the National Dog Groomers Association of America to validate your skills. Assemble a portfolio of finished grooms before applying to salons.
Can you get hired as a pet groomer with little experience?
Yes, many salons hire entry-level bathers with no prior professional experience and train them toward full grooming. Starting as a bather or grooming assistant gives you structured time on the floor learning handling, drying technique, and coat prep. Volunteering at a shelter to build handling confidence and taking an introductory grooming course first strengthens your application even without paid experience.
What does the pet groomer interview process look like?
Most grooming interviews include a brief conversation about your experience and the breeds you're comfortable with, followed by a working interview where you groom one or two dogs on-site. The employer evaluates your handling technique, safety awareness, and finished result. Some salons ask you to bring your own tools, so confirm this beforehand. A second-round offer discussion typically follows if the working interview goes well.
Where can I find and apply to pet groomer jobs?
You can find and apply to pet groomer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search for roles that match your experience level, preferred setting, or location, then apply directly to each listing. There's no middleman step, so your application goes straight to the employer.
