Relay Technician Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a relay technician in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license specifically for relay technicians, but most employers require NETA or NICET certification in electrical testing before hiring or shortly after onboarding. A typical path begins with an associate or bachelor degree in electrical technology or electrical engineering, followed by apprenticeship or entry-level substation work, and then pursuit of NETA ETT or NICET credentials. Familiarity with ERCOT protection standards gives Texas applicants a meaningful edge in the hiring process.
How much do relay technicians make in Texas?
Relay technicians in Texas earn a median of about $102,470 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,840 for the lowest 10% to over $129,870 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire relay technicians in Texas?
Employers hiring relay technicians in Texas right now include EPS, ABM Industries, and Entergy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's deregulated ERCOT grid and extensive transmission infrastructure create consistent demand at utilities, independent power producers, and electrical testing contractors operating statewide.
Which Texas cities have the most relay technician jobs?
New Braunfels, Richardson, and Sugar Land have the most relay technician openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its concentration of large electric utilities, petrochemical facilities, and grid infrastructure contractors, while Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio draw consistent demand from major investor-owned utilities and the military installations and municipal power systems anchoring those metros.
Are there remote relay technician jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Relay technician work is fundamentally hands-on, requiring on-site testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting at substations and industrial facilities. About 0% of relay technician openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve relay settings engineering, documentation review, or protection coordination analysis rather than field testing work.
How can I get hired as a relay technician in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an electrical apprenticeship or a substation electrician role at a Texas utility or electrical contractor, which builds the hands-on exposure employers require before moving into dedicated relay work. Large Texas utilities like Oncor and CPS Energy periodically run apprenticeship and utility technician programs that accept candidates from vocational or community college electrical programs. Pursuing NETA ETT certification while in an entry-level substation or metering role signals commitment and accelerates the move into relay work.
Where can I find and apply to relay technician jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to relay technician jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from utilities, electrical contractors, and industrial employers across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly to the employer through the listing.
