Tips for Your Remote Actuary Job Search
Signal async fluency in your application
Remote actuarial teams rely on written communication over calls. Your cover letter and any writing samples should demonstrate clear, structured explanations of complex analyses. Employers hiring remotely screen for candidates who can document assumptions and conclusions without a whiteboard session.
Apply early to remote roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists remote actuary openings from across the U.S. in one place, so you can find roles that match your exam level and specialty and apply directly without sifting through mixed results.
Build a portfolio of documented models
Remote employers can't watch you work, so your output has to speak for itself. A GitHub repository or shared folder with clean, commented actuarial models in R, Python, or Excel gives hiring managers concrete evidence of your technical depth before an interview.
Target firms with distributed actuarial teams
Not every insurer or consulting firm has built the infrastructure for remote actuarial work. Focus your search on companies that already list multiple remote actuarial roles, since they've already solved the collaboration and data-access challenges that make remote actuarial work practical.
Prepare for technical remote interview formats
Remote actuary interviews often include asynchronous case studies or take-home modeling exercises rather than live whiteboard problems. Practice presenting your analytical reasoning in writing and know your exam material cold, since remote technical screens move faster without a room to slow things down.
Remote Actuary Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote actuary job?
Remote actuary roles go to candidates who can demonstrate independent work habits, clear written communication, and the ability to manage complex modeling projects without in-person oversight. Insurance carriers, health plans, and consulting firms with distributed teams are the most consistent remote hirers. Actuarial exam progress, proficiency in tools like Excel, R, or Python, and a portfolio of documented analyses all strengthen a remote application.
Which companies hire remote actuarys?
Remote actuary roles are posted by Centene, Pacific Life, and Liberty Mutual Insurance and others right now, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The employers most likely to hire remotely are insurance carriers, reinsurers, health plans, and actuarial consulting firms that already operate distributed technical teams.
Can you get a remote actuary job with no experience?
Yes, but remote entry-level actuary roles are harder to land because employers expect you to work independently from day one without in-person mentorship. Internships, actuarial exam passes, and self-directed projects in R or Python help compensate for limited professional experience. Some insurance carriers and consulting firms hire entry-level remote candidates specifically to support senior actuaries on distributed teams.
Do you need a degree for remote actuary jobs?
Usually, but the actuarial exam path carries more weight than the specific degree field. Remote employers focus on exam progress, analytical skills, and demonstrated modeling ability. A degree in mathematics, statistics, or economics is a common baseline, but candidates who show strong exam results and hands-on experience with actuarial software can compete regardless of their exact academic background.
Which industries hire the most remote actuarys?
Remote actuary roles concentrate in Insurance, Healthcare & Medical Services, and Technology & Software, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors hire remotely because their actuarial work is data-driven and model-based, making it well-suited to distributed teams that collaborate asynchronously.
