Research Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a research engineer job in Chicago?
The strongest path is targeting Chicago's dense clusters of life sciences companies, national laboratories with local offices, and university research centers on the Near North Side and in the Illinois Medical District. Candidates who can demonstrate hands-on lab experience or published research get noticed fastest here. Networking through institutions like the University of Chicago, Northwestern, and Illinois Tech also opens doors that job boards alone won't.
Which companies hire research engineers in Chicago?
Companies currently hiring research engineers in Chicago include Rush University Medical Center, PwC, and Deloitte, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's hiring mix leans toward large medtech and materials science firms, national laboratory contractors, and mid-size engineering consultancies with R&D divisions.
Are there remote research engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though remote availability depends heavily on the role: computational, data-driven, and software-focused research engineering positions go remote far more often than lab-based or hardware roles. About 33% of research engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with the hybrid split most common among analytics and modeling-focused positions at Chicago's larger corporate R&D centers.
How can I get a research engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is landing a research associate or junior engineer role at one of the city's university-affiliated labs or teaching hospitals, particularly those connected to Northwestern, UChicago, or Rush. Many Chicago medtech and manufacturing firms also hire entry-level engineers directly from co-op and internship pipelines. Building a portfolio of independent projects or contributing to open research programs at Argonne National Laboratory's local programs strengthens an application significantly.
Which industries hire the most research engineers in Chicago?
Most research engineer openings in Chicago sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Education, and Investment & Asset Management, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's concentration of academic medical centers, industrial manufacturers along the lakefront corridor, and growing biotech clusters in the Illinois Medical District makes those sectors the primary drivers of local research engineering demand.
