Job Description
We are seeking an Associate Scientist II to join our Drug Metabolism and Disposition Team within the Quantitative Translation and ADME Sciences organization in Development Sciences at AbbVie Pharmaceuticals. This position is an opportunity to join a dynamic team and work on in vitro and in vivo biotransformation studies. In this role, you will leverage cutting-edge analytical technologies and workflows to solve problems, advance our pipeline and drive pharmaceutical innovation. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with a desire to learn and grow and create solutions that will accelerate drug discovery and improve patient outcomes.
This role will work collaboratively with multiple teams within Discovery, Development Sciences and the Clinical Pharmacology organization to perform analyses and implement technologies to deliver precise, reliable, and reproducible solutions. Communication skills are key to being able to interface with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine tasks competently and independently and generate reliable and consistent results.
- Lab based position in a high functioning analytical laboratory.
- Ability to perform in vitro assays and routinely work with radio labeled compounds.
- Optimize procedures and protocols to enhance productivity and efficiency with input from a more senior scientist.
- Competently perform all sample preparation for analysis (LC, MS, Scintillation).
- Independently operate LC and MS instruments to collect data for both Discovery and Development studies across multiple vendor platforms (Thermo, Sciex).
Learn and understand new experimental techniques.
- Appropriately modify protocols, as required, to suit the changing needs of research or development sciences.
- Build theoretical and practical knowledge to carry out job function.
- Place data in proper scientific context by consulting and citing relevant literature.
Demonstrate technical proficiency in his/her field.
- Impact projects predominantly through lab-based activities.
- Demonstrate proficiency by learning multiple experimental techniques.
- General understanding of drug metabolism and disposition in drug discovery and development.
Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, controlled drug and radioactive compounds, GxP compliance, and animal care where applicable.
- Keep accurate and current experiments and/or records of research according to AbbVie policies.
Showing good oral and written communication skills.
- Routinely presents data clearly and thoroughly in both one-on-one and group meetings with clear and precise graphs/charts/tables.
- Provide written summary reports as appropriate.
- Ability to communicate group objectives outside of DMD.
Exhibit a strong willingness to learn and contribute as a team player with a positive attitude.
- Learn and share knowledge with colleagues and participate in internal and external presentation opportunities.
- Actions demonstrate that group/project success benefit everyone.
- Plan and perform routine tasks competently and independently within a timely fashion, and generate reliable and consistent results.
- Documentation of experimental activities and results in a GMP compliant fashion using an electronic data acquisition and management systems.
- Analyze and critique results, noting significant deviations from the expected results.
- Troubleshoot experiments and instrumentation.
- Learn and understand new experimental techniques with a curiosity to apply them for unique project/assignment requirements.
- Demonstrate skill in multiple techniques and appropriately modify protocols, as required, to suit the changing needs of research or development sciences.
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in his/her field, preferentially in the analytical areas of quantitative and instrumental analysis.
- Impact projects predominantly through lab and/or pilot plant based activities.
- Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, controlled drug and radioactive compounds, and GxP compliance, where applicable.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or equivalent education, with typically 3 or more years’ experience or Master’s Degree or equivalent education (no additional experience).
- Theoretical and practical knowledge and experience (in chromatography and/or mass spectrometry) is highly preferred to carry out job function.
- Excellent oral and communication skills.
