About the Role

First Transaction Corporation is a Baltimore, Maryland-based company that provides Point of Sale (POS) solutions and processes electronic payments for merchants. We're looking for an early-career Associate Data Scientist to turn customer and transaction data into insights, recommend POS features and systems that improve customer experience, and help build them.

This is a full-time position. We also welcome applications from strong internship candidates who meet most of the qualifications below.

You'll do data analysis, customer analytics, product thinking and business problem-solving. You'll work closely with our business and technology teams to take ideas from data to launched features.

What You'll Work On

• Build a customer feedback and complaint system that connects to our website.
• Design a merchant loyalty program based on transaction behavior.
• Find the POS features that drive merchant retention and recommend what to build next.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze POS, customer and transaction data to find trends, patterns and business opportunities.
• Write SQL queries to pull, analyze, report on and validate data.
• Design a customer complaint and feedback system, including its data structure, workflow, analytics and connection to the company website.
• Help design and evaluate a customer loyalty program using customer behavior and transaction data.
• Do customer segmentation, retention and engagement analysis.
• Build dashboards, reports and KPIs that track customer and business performance.
• Use statistical and data science methods to solve business problems.
• Study merchant and customer pain points, such as checkout speed, payment failures, chargebacks and support tickets, to find where better systems would help most.
• Turn data findings into specific recommendations for new POS features, system improvements and customer-facing tools.
• Write clear feature proposals that cover the problem, supporting data, expected impact and success metrics.
• Work with developers to define requirements and help build, test and launch new features.
• Measure feature performance after launch with A/B tests, adoption tracking and customer feedback, then recommend improvements.

Work Arrangement

This is a hybrid role based in our Baltimore, MD office. Employees and interns must be able to attend in-person office meetings, briefings, team discussions and other company events as required. They must also be able to work remotely on projects and meet deliverables and deadlines.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics, Business Analytics or a related field.
• About 1 year of relevant experience. This can be professional work, an internship or a significant project.
• Strong SQL skills.
• Working knowledge of Python and data analysis tools.
• Understanding of statistics and core data science concepts.
• Experience using AI tools for data analysis.
• Ability to connect data insights to product decisions and business outcomes.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.
• Ability to turn data into clear, actionable business recommendations.

Internship Candidates

Students currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field are encouraged to apply if they have:

• Strong SQL and Python skills.
• Relevant coursework, academic projects or previous internship experience.
• A solid grasp of statistics and data analysis.

Internship details: Internship length and schedule are flexible and will be discussed during the interview based on the candidate's qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in a quantitative or data-related field.
• Experience with Pandas, NumPy or Scikit-learn.
• Experience with Tableau, Power BI or similar visualization tools.
• Experience with A/B testing or experiment design.
• Basic software development experience (for example Python scripts, web apps or APIs), or experience working closely with engineering teams.
• Experience with customer analytics, loyalty programs, CRM, payments or POS data.
• Familiarity with payment processing concepts such as authorizations, interchange, chargebacks and settlement.
• Familiarity with APIs, websites and data integration.
• Interest in product management, user experience (UX) or customer experience design.

Background Check

Because this role involves access to personal data, payment information and cardholder data, a background check is required. Employment is contingent on successfully completing a background check, conducted after a conditional offer of employment and in accordance with applicable federal, Maryland and Baltimore City laws.

Compensation

• Pay range: $15 – $30 per hour, for both full-time and internship positions.
• Benefits: Paid holidays per company policy.

The final pay will be based on the candidate's qualifications, experience and value to the company's needs, and will be discussed during the interview and selection process.
