INTRODUCTION
Air Liquide is Hiring for a Research Engineer - Newark, DE.
ABOUT THE JOB
The Innovation and Development Division (IDD) drives the innovation strategy for the Hubs and Operations, and contributes to the Group's transformation. It is responsible for imagining, developing and incubating new solutions until they are brought to market, particularly when it comes to offers with a high technological content (including digital and IT). IDD gathers more than 3,000 employees from 70 nationalities at 60 sites.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A Research Engineer is expected to operate at the cutting edge of our technology, driving the development of first-of-their-kind prototypes and products. This role exists to bridge the gap between early-stage R&D innovations and real-world customer pilot deployments. The successful candidate will be a driven self-starter with a rigorous approach to problem-solving, capable of seamlessly integrating mechanical design, electrical circuitry, and software into fully functional, industrial-grade systems. Ultimately, this role accelerates our time-to-market; true success for this position is defined as validating these prototypes in the field, independently navigating technical roadblocks, and executing a seamless hand-off to our internal engineering and operations teams for full-scale commercialization and lifecycle management.
YOUR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-
System Design and Integration: Lead the end-to-end design of full prototype systems in a logical and systematic manner. Integrate mechanical components, electrical circuits, and software to create first of their kind prototypes for pilot.
-
Customer Pilot Deployment & Tech Transfer: Deploy and validate prototypes directly at customer pilot sites in a professional and technical capacity. While you will champion the pilot phase, your objective is to package the technical solution, documentation, and operational parameters for a hand-off to the business-led engineering and operations teams who will take over the product.
-
Technical Problem Solving: Diagnose complex system failures during the prototyping phase to maintain project momentum. Employ strong problem-solving skills to engineer immediate, effective solutions without shying away from necessary design pivots.
-
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with R&D scientists, engineering sales, strategy teams, and critically, internal operations, to align the prototype with market demands and internal manufacturing capabilities. Ensure clear communication across all business units.
-
Project Organization: Organize prototyping schedules, resource allocations, and technical documentation efficiently. This flexible approach ensures pilot deployments remain on track and within scope until the official operational hand-off is complete.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
-
Master or Bachelor in Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering.
-
Specialized Knowledge: Deep understanding of full-system architecture and taking concepts from the lab, through pilot.
-
Skills: Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D Printing, General assembly and use of machine tools, Software experience (C++, Python, Others), Exceptionally strong organizational skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.
-
At least 3 years of experience; Proven track record in rapid prototyping, equipment design, system integration, and technology transfer to manufacturing/operations.
-
Strong commercial and business acumen to understand how technical solutions integrate into customer operations and our own internal supply chain.
-
Ability to translate highly complex technical engineering concepts into straightforward standard operating procedures for the broader business.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
At Air Liquide, we are committed to build a diverse and inclusive workplace that embraces the diversity of our employees, our customers, patients, community stakeholders and cultures across the world.
We welcome and consider applications from all qualified applicants, regardless of their background. We strongly believe a diverse organization opens up opportunities for people to express their talent, both individually and collectively and it helps foster our ability to innovate by living our fundamentals, acting for our success and creating an engaging environment in a changing world.
COMPENSATION
-
Comprehensive Family Benefits: Airgas offers a full benefits package designed to support your whole life, including Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D, and Disability Insurance.
-
Support for Parents: We offer up to 14-week paid child birth benefits to support growing families.
-
Future Security: 401(k) Retirement Plan with company match, Tuition Assistance, Paid Holidays, Vacation, and Sick time.
-

- Record of contributions to technical projects through published papers, patents, or documented prototypes
Tips for Your Research Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to the lab
Research engineers are evaluated on what you built, measured, and published, not job duties. Lead each bullet with a concrete outcome: a model accuracy gain, a cycle time reduction, or a prototype that advanced to production. Hiring committees skim for those proof points first.
List your toolchain precisely
Many research engineer postings filter resumes by specific tools before a human reads them. Name every simulation environment, ML framework, lab instrument, or data pipeline you've used. Don't group them under vague headers like 'proficient in software' when the listing asks for PyTorch or COMSOL.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists research engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Signal both depth and breadth on applications
Research engineer roles sit between pure research and product engineering. If your background skews academic, highlight any prototype work or cross-functional collaboration. If it skews industrial, point to any novel methods you introduced. Showing both sides makes you a stronger fit for most teams.
Prepare a technical presentation for interviews
Most research engineer loops include a 20-to-30-minute research talk where you walk through a project end to end. Practice explaining your methodology choices out loud, not just your results. Interviewers probe your reasoning, so rehearsing the 'why' matters as much as the 'what.'
Negotiate on total compensation components
Research engineer offers often include publication bonuses, conference travel budgets, or access to compute resources that don't show up in a base offer. Ask about those explicitly during negotiation. They affect your actual working conditions and professional development more than most candidates realize.
Research Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most research engineers?
The companies hiring the most research engineers right now include Lam Research, ByteDance, and Apple, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Washington, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is highest in technology, defense, and pharmaceutical sectors.
How many research engineer jobs are remote?
About 16% of research engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though availability varies significantly by specialization. Software-focused research roles in machine learning and AI tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while roles requiring lab access, hardware prototyping, or classified work are typically on-site.
How do you become a research engineer?
Most research engineer roles require at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a physical science, with a master's degree strengthening your candidacy for positions involving novel research. Build a portfolio of hands-on projects, contribute to open-source work or published research, and develop fluency in the tools common to your target specialization before applying.
Can you get a research engineer job with little experience?
Yes, entry-level research engineer roles exist, but you'll need to compensate with strong project work. Hiring managers look for demonstrated ability to frame a research question, run experiments, and interpret results, even in academic or personal projects. A capstone project, a published paper, or a documented GitHub repository can substitute for professional experience in many cases.
What does the research engineer interview process look like?
A typical research engineer interview includes an initial recruiter screen, a technical phone interview covering domain knowledge and coding or mathematical reasoning, and an onsite or virtual loop. The loop usually includes a research presentation where you walk through a past project, one or more problem-solving sessions, and conversations with team members assessing your ability to collaborate across research and engineering.
Where can I find and apply to research engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to research engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialization and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
