Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs in Maine: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a surgical dental assistant in Maine?
Maine does not require a state license specifically for dental assistants, but the Maine Board of Dental Examiners regulates certain expanded functions, including radiography. Most surgical dental assistant roles in Maine expect candidates to hold a Dental Assisting National Board certification and a state-approved radiology certificate. Completing an accredited dental assisting program, ideally one that includes a surgical or clinical rotation, is the most direct path to competitive candidacy.
Which companies hire surgical dental assistants in Maine?
Employers hiring surgical dental assistants in Maine right now include Aspen Dental, Maine Dental, and Penobscot Community Health Care, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Maine's large integrated health systems, including MaineHealth and Northern Light Health, are among the most consistent sources of surgical dental assistant openings across the state.
Which Maine cities have the most surgical dental assistant jobs?
Portland, Auburn, and Bangor have the most surgical dental assistant openings in Maine. Portland anchors the market as Maine's largest city and home to the state's most concentrated cluster of specialty dental practices and hospital-affiliated oral surgery programs, while Bangor and Augusta contribute steady demand through regional health system campuses and established private oral surgery groups serving their surrounding communities.
Are there remote surgical dental assistant jobs in Maine?
Yes, but they're rare. About 4% of surgical dental assistant openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how deeply hands-on the role is by nature. The limited remote component that does exist typically involves administrative tasks such as pre-authorization paperwork, patient intake coordination, or scheduling support rather than any clinical function.
How can I get hired as a surgical dental assistant in Maine with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a general dental assistant role at a large Maine employer, such as a MaineHealth or Northern Light Health dental clinic, and requesting surgical exposure as skills develop. Completing a dental assisting program with a clinical rotation, obtaining your radiology certificate through a Maine Board of Dental Examiners-approved course, and holding current CPR certification all strengthen an application. Some candidates move from sterilization technician or dental receptionist roles within the same practice, gaining familiarity with surgical workflows before stepping into a chair-side assistant position.
Where can I find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Maine?
You can find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs in Maine on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to whichever positions fit.
