Tips for Your Surgical Dental Assistant Job Search
Tailor your resume for surgical settings
List specific surgical procedures you've assisted with, such as tooth extractions, bone grafting, or implant placements. Employers scanning for surgical dental assistants want procedure-level detail, not just general chairside experience. Name the instruments and equipment you've handled.
Highlight sedation and anesthesia exposure
Many oral surgery practices require assistants who've worked alongside providers administering IV sedation or nitrous oxide. If you have that exposure, name it explicitly on your resume and in cover letters. It narrows the field significantly in your favor.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists surgical dental assistant openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter for your certification level
Some roles require an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant credential or state-specific radiography certification. Read each listing's requirements carefully before applying so you target openings where your credentials already satisfy the minimum, not just the preferred qualifications.
Prepare a skills demonstration for interviews
Oral surgery practices frequently ask candidates to walk through their sterilization protocol or instrument setup process during interviews. Rehearse a clear, step-by-step explanation of how you prepare and break down a surgical tray. Specificity signals real experience.
Follow up after a working interview
Many dental practices schedule a paid working interview before extending an offer. Send a brief note within 24 hours referencing one specific moment from the day, such as a procedure you assisted on, to reinforce that you paid attention and fit the team's workflow.
Surgical Dental Assistant Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most surgical dental assistants?
The companies hiring the most surgical dental assistants right now include The Guthrie Clinic, Northeast Surgical Specialists, and seacoast Oral Surgery, Dr. Dave Pak, with the largest share of openings in Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Multi-location oral surgery groups and dental service organizations tend to post the highest volume of openings consistently.
How many surgical dental assistant jobs are remote?
About 0% of surgical dental assistant openings are fully remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of the role. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements are dental billing, practice coordination, and patient scheduling rather than chairside surgical assisting.
How do you become a surgical dental assistant?
You become a surgical dental assistant by completing an accredited dental assisting program, earning your state radiography certification, and obtaining a credential such as the Certified Dental Assistant designation. From there, you build surgical experience by working in a general dental practice before transitioning to an oral surgery setting, or by starting directly in a surgical office that trains on the job.
Can you get hired as a surgical dental assistant with no surgical experience?
Yes, some oral surgery practices will hire candidates with strong general dental assisting backgrounds and train them on surgical procedures. Your odds improve significantly if you already have radiography certification, chairside experience with extractions in a general office, and demonstrated comfort with clinical environments. Entry-level roles at large group practices are the most accessible starting point.
What does the surgical dental assistant interview process look like?
Most practices start with a phone or video screening to confirm your credentials and availability, followed by an in-person interview with the office manager or lead dentist. Many oral surgery offices then schedule a paid or unpaid working interview where you assist with actual procedures so the team can assess your technique, instrument knowledge, and chair-side manner before making an offer.
Where can I find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs?
You can find and apply to surgical dental assistant jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the available roles to find positions that match your credentials and location, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
