Surveyor Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a surveyor job in Chicago?
Target Chicago's active construction and infrastructure sectors, where demand for surveyors is consistently high. Engineering and design firms based in the Loop and River North hire regularly, as do transit and public works agencies tied to city and county projects. Candidates who can demonstrate experience with urban boundary or topographic work, or who hold a PLSS background relevant to Illinois land records, tend to stand out in this market.
Which companies hire surveyors in Chicago?
Chicago surveyor roles are posted by Turner & Townsend Pty Limited, EXP, and RDSolutions and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. The local market includes a strong mix of engineering consultancies, public infrastructure agencies, and large general contractors tied to ongoing development across the metro area.
Are there remote surveyor jobs in Chicago?
Yes, but only for specific functions, since most surveyor work requires physical presence on-site. About 100% of surveyor openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting roles where desk-based work is the focus. In Chicago, the tasks most suited to remote arrangements include GIS data processing, CAD drafting, and project coordination for firms running multiple regional sites.
How can I get a surveyor job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is a survey technician or field crew role with an engineering consultancy or construction firm. Firms working on city infrastructure projects, including streetscape and transit work, regularly hire entry-level field staff. Familiarity with total station equipment or basic CAD software gives applicants a concrete edge, and community college programs in the Chicago area can help candidates build those credentials quickly.
Which industries hire the most surveyors in Chicago?
Most surveyor openings in Chicago sit in Consulting & Professional Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Chicago's ongoing investment in transit expansion, lakefront development, and urban infill projects keeps demand from those sectors steady and local hiring active throughout the year.
