Tax Intern Jobs in New Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax intern in New Mexico?
The most direct path is enrolling in an accredited accounting or finance program at a New Mexico institution such as the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, or Eastern New Mexico University, then applying to internships during your junior or senior year. No state license is required to work as a tax intern, though completing the coursework that qualifies you to sit for the CPA exam under the New Mexico Public Accountancy Board's requirements strengthens your candidacy considerably.
Which companies hire tax interns in New Mexico?
Employers hiring tax interns in New Mexico right now include KPMG, SJHL, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Regional CPA firms based in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, along with state government agencies and university finance offices, also represent consistent sources of tax intern openings across New Mexico.
Which New Mexico cities have the most tax intern jobs?
The cities with the most tax intern openings in New Mexico are Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Rio Rancho. Albuquerque drives the majority of postings because it is home to the largest concentration of CPA firms, corporate finance departments, and state agency offices, while Santa Fe adds openings tied to state government accounting functions and Las Cruces benefits from New Mexico State University's regional employer relationships.
Are there remote tax intern jobs in New Mexico?
Yes, and more than many fields, since tax preparation and compliance work is largely document-driven and does not require a physical worksite. About 38% of tax intern openings tied to New Mexico are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how readily firms have adapted their intern programs to flexible arrangements. Federal and state income tax compliance tasks are the most commonly offered in a remote or hybrid format.
How can I get hired as a tax intern in New Mexico with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through on-campus recruiting at the University of New Mexico or New Mexico State University, both of which host accounting career fairs where regional and national firms recruit students who have completed no more than introductory tax coursework. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites across Albuquerque and Las Cruces offer hands-on preparation experience that effectively replaces a prior internship on a resume. Passing the first section of the CPA exam or earning an IRS Annual Filing Season Program record of completion gives candidates a concrete credential that separates them from other applicants with similar coursework.
Where can I find and apply to tax intern jobs in New Mexico?
You can find and apply to tax intern jobs in New Mexico on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Search the listings, find the roles that match your background and availability, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
