Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Development Engineer
Align your credentials to USMCA's Engineer category
TN approval hinges on a degree specifically in engineering, not just a related technical field. A computer science or physics degree typically won't qualify unless the job duties map directly to engineering work defined under USMCA.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Search for companies with recent visa filings in engineering roles. These employers have experience with work visa sponsorship and understand the sponsorship process, making them more likely to support your TN application and provide the required employer support letter.
Request a TN support letter before your border crossing
Canadians apply directly at a port of entry, but the employer's support letter is what CBP officers evaluate most closely. Get it on company letterhead, specifying your engineering role, degree, and USMCA category before you travel.
Prepare for consulate timelines if you hold Mexican citizenship
Mexican TN applicants must complete a U.S. consulate interview, which adds weeks to your start date. Build this into your negotiated start date with the employer so your offer letter isn't voided before you get your visa stamped.
Use Migrate Mate to find Development Engineer roles with sponsorship
Filter by TN-eligible employers on Migrate Mate to surface Development Engineer positions where companies are already set up to file. Avoids spending weeks on applications at companies that won't engage on visa sponsorship at all.
Clarify job title framing before the employer files
CBP scrutinizes job titles carefully. If your offer letter says 'Product Development Engineer' but internal systems list you as 'Technical Program Manager,' request a title correction before filing. Mismatches between title, duties, and degree are a leading TN denial trigger.

Find Development Engineer JobsDevelopment Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Development Engineer role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, provided your job duties align with engineering work under the USMCA Engineer category and your degree is specifically in engineering or a directly related discipline. Roles focused on product design, systems development, or R&D typically qualify. Generalist titles like 'Technical Lead' or 'Program Manager' require stronger documentation to establish the engineering connection.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Development Engineer positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start as soon as the employer files and CBP approves, often on the same day at the border. H-1B requires winning a random lottery, a six-month wait, and a specific start date of October 1. For Development Engineers with a qualifying degree, TN is a more direct and predictable path.
Where can I find Development Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN-eligible professionals and lets you search Development Engineer roles filtered by employers open to sponsorship. General job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up cold-screening dozens of postings. Searching through Migrate Mate puts you directly in front of employers who have already indicated they'll work with TN candidates.
Can my employer sponsor TN status if they've never done it before?
Yes. Unlike H-1B, TN doesn't require USCIS petition approval for Canadians, so there's no prior experience required on the employer's end. The employer writes a support letter and you present it at the border. The main risk is an employer who writes a vague or incomplete letter. Request a review of the letter before travel.
What happens if my Development Engineer job duties change after TN approval?
If your role shifts significantly beyond what was described in the original TN application, your status may no longer match your approved classification. You'd need a new TN entry reflecting the updated duties, which means either a fresh border crossing for Canadians or a new consulate appointment for Mexican citizens. Document any major role changes with your employer immediately.
