Align your credentials to USMCA engineer requirements
TN visa classification for Structural Drafters falls under the Engineer category. Gather your degree transcripts, any professional drafting certifications, and a credential evaluation if your degree is from a non-U.S. institution before approaching employers.
Target firms with active federal or infrastructure contracts
Engineering and architecture firms working on federally funded projects routinely file TN documentation and are familiar with the process. Construction management firms and structural engineering consultancies in this pipeline handle international hires regularly.
Get your offer letter to reflect TN-specific language
CBP or a consular officer will scrutinize your support letter. Confirm it states your job title as Engineer or Drafter, your specific duties, the temporary nature of the position, and your qualifying degree. Vague job descriptions are the leading cause of TN denials.
Clarify software specialization when targeting Canadian roles
Canadian Structural Drafters crossing at a land port of entry can receive TN status same-day. Emphasize proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD Structural Detailing, or Tekla Structures in your support documentation, as officers assess whether the role genuinely requires professional-level expertise.
Search TN-specific roles through Migrate Mate
Filtering for TN visa sponsorship in a general job search wastes time on employers unfamiliar with the category. Use Migrate Mate to find Structural Drafter openings where employers have already indicated TN sponsorship availability for Canadian and Mexican professionals.
Prepare for Mexican nationals' consular appointment timeline
Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a port of entry. Schedule your appointment early and confirm your employer has certified the offer letter, since consular wait times in Mexico City and Monterrey can extend several weeks during peak periods.
Structural Drafter TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Structural Drafter role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but the classification matters. Structural Drafters are approved under the Engineer or Technical Drafter category within USMCA's TN occupation list. Your offer letter must describe duties consistent with that professional category, and your degree should be in engineering technology, drafting, or a directly related field. A purely mechanical or unrelated degree weakens the case significantly.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Structural Drafter positions?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be approved at the border the same day you apply. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance, a lottery selection, and USCIS petition processing. For Structural Drafters who are Canadian or Mexican citizens, TN is faster, less expensive, and more predictable than competing in the H-1B lottery each spring.
Where can I find Structural Drafter jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa type, which means you're manually vetting dozens of postings. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you find Structural Drafter roles where employers have confirmed TN sponsorship availability for Canadian and Mexican professionals, cutting out the guesswork upfront.
Can a Structural Drafter switch employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you cannot start with the new employer until TN status is issued for that specific job. Canadians can typically go to a port of entry with a new offer letter and receive same-day approval. Mexican nationals must schedule a new consular appointment. Your previous TN is employer-specific, so the transition requires a fresh application tied to the new offer.
What documents does a Structural Drafter need for the TN application?
You'll need a valid Canadian or Mexican passport, a detailed employer support letter describing your role and qualifying it under the Engineer or Drafter USMCA category, and proof of your qualifying degree. If your credentials are from outside North America, include a professional credential evaluation. Bring original documents, not copies, particularly when applying at a Canadian land port of entry.
