Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Electrical Design Engineer
Align your credentials to TN engineering definitions
TN visa eligibility for engineers requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. A degree in electronics technology or a related applied science may not qualify, so verify your credential maps to the USMCA engineering occupation before applying.
Target employers with recent visa filing experience
Search for companies with recent visa filings in roles related to electrical or design engineering. Those employers already understand work visa sponsorship and won't need educating on the TN process. Since TN visas rely on a straightforward employer support letter presented at the U.S. border or consulate—without government filings—employers experienced with visa sponsorship in general through H-1B visa, E-3 visa, or green card processes are typically well-equipped to support TN candidates through this streamlined pathway.
Request a TN support letter covering your specific duties
Your employer's support letter must describe your daily responsibilities in terms that match the TN engineering occupation, not a generic job title. CBP officers at the border use this letter to verify eligibility, so vague duty descriptions are a common reason for delays or denials.
Find TN-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to filter Electrical Design Engineer roles by employers with documented TN visa sponsorship history. This shortens your search considerably compared to cold-applying and hoping a recruiter understands TN requirements.
Prepare Canadian border entry documents as a complete packet
Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry, so your offer letter, degree transcripts, and professional engineering credentials must all be organized and ready on the day of crossing. Missing a single document can result in secondary inspection or a return trip.
Clarify third-party site placement before the TN filing
Many Electrical Design Engineer roles involve work at client facilities rather than the employer's own office. CBP scrutinizes these arrangements under TN rules, so your support letter should explicitly address who supervises your work and confirm the employer-employee relationship remains intact.
Electrical Design Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Electrical Design Engineer role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Electrical Design Engineers qualify under the USMCA's engineer occupation category, which covers professional engineering work in areas like circuit design, power systems, and PCB layout. Your degree must be in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, and your job duties must align with recognized engineering practice, not purely technician-level tasks.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Electrical Design Engineer positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start work as soon as CBP approves your entry. H-1B requires entering a randomized lottery each spring with no guarantee of selection. For qualified Electrical Design Engineers with a Canadian or Mexican passport, TN is typically faster and more predictable than the H-1B path.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a description of your duties, the professional engineering nature of the role, your salary, and the intended duration of employment. For Canadian applicants crossing at a port of entry, this letter is central to CBP's eligibility assessment and should be precise about responsibilities.
Where can I find Electrical Design Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can search Electrical Design Engineer positions filtered by employers with recent visa filings, which cuts out the guesswork of approaching companies experienced with work visa sponsorship and likely familiar with the USMCA engineering occupation category.
Can I switch employers while on TN status as an Electrical Design Engineer?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. To change jobs, your new employer must support a fresh TN application before you begin work. For Canadian citizens, this typically means a new port-of-entry crossing or a change of status filing with USCIS. You cannot simply transfer TN status the way some other visa categories allow.
