Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Education Counselor
Verify your credentials match the TN category
The TN category for Education Counselors requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree. A degree in counseling, psychology, or education is the clearest fit. Social work or related fields may qualify if your job duties align directly with counseling functions.
Target employers with established HR compliance teams
Universities, community colleges, and large school districts have experience with work visa sponsorship. These institutions are familiar with visa sponsorship requirements, which streamlines your hiring process compared to employers sponsoring work visa candidates for the first time. For TN status specifically, Canadian applicants can present their offer letter at the U.S. border, while Mexican applicants apply at a U.S. consulate—both processes move quickly with employers who understand visa sponsorship logistics.
Request a detailed offer letter before your border appointment
CBP officers at the port of entry assess your TN eligibility on the spot. Your offer letter must specify your title as Education Counselor, your degree requirement, your employer's name and address, and your intended start and end dates.
Clarify your employer's visa sponsorship experience early in negotiation
Your employer will prepare a support letter and handle the TN visa process directly—there's no government certification step required. Once your employer has the support letter ready, you can proceed to the U.S. border (if you're Canadian) or consulate (if you're Mexican) to apply. Ask your employer if they've sponsored work visas before and whether they're familiar with preparing TN support documentation.
Search TN-specific job listings using Migrate Mate
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type. Migrate Mate lets you search Education Counselor roles specifically open to TN visa candidates, so you're not wasting applications on employers who only sponsor H-1B or won't sponsor at all.
Prepare for renewal before your first TN period ends
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with no cap on renewals. Start the renewal process at least 90 days before your expiration. Your employer must prepare updated documentation if your role, wage, or work location has changed since your original TN approval.

Find Education Counselor JobsEducation Counselor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Education Counselor qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Education Counselor is a listed TN visa occupation under the USMCA. To qualify, you need a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in a field directly related to counseling, such as counseling, psychology, or education. Your employer will prepare a support letter documenting your role, salary, and qualifications, which you'll present at your U.S. port of entry (for Canadian citizens) or submit with your application at a U.S. consulate (for Mexican citizens).
How does TN compare to H-1B for Education Counselor roles?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadians, and Mexicans have a separate allocation that also avoids the H-1B lottery. Processing is faster since Canadians can apply directly at a port of entry. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance and entry into the lottery, which adds significant uncertainty that TN does not.
How do I find Education Counselor jobs that sponsor TN visas?
Most standard job listings don't specify which visa types an employer will sponsor. Migrate Mate focuses specifically on roles open to TN visa candidates, letting you filter Education Counselor positions by sponsorship type. This saves time you'd otherwise spend applying to employers who won't support a TN application.
What documents do I need for a TN application as an Education Counselor?
You need a valid Canadian or Mexican passport, a detailed offer letter from your U.S. employer confirming your role as Education Counselor, and proof of your qualifying degree. Canadians present these documents at a port of entry; Mexicans apply at a U.S. consulate and must schedule a visa interview.
Can I switch Education Counselor employers while on TN status?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. Your new employer will need to write a support letter documenting the role and your qualifications, and you'll need to present this at a port of entry (Canadians) or apply through a U.S. consulate (Mexicans) for TN status with the new employer. Don't resign before your new TN approval is confirmed.
