Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Nursing Instructor
Verify your credentials meet TN requirements
TN visa classification for Nursing Instructors requires at least a baccalaureate degree in nursing. If your degree is from a Canadian or Mexican institution, confirm U.S. equivalency through a credential evaluation before approaching any employer.
Target community colleges and university nursing programs
Community colleges and university-based nursing programs hire Nursing Instructors regularly and have documented experience navigating TN sponsorship. Clinical simulation labs and ADN-to-BSN programs at public institutions often have consistent faculty openings.
Clarify clinical licensure expectations before applying
Many Nursing Instructor roles require an active RN license in the state where the school is located, not just an academic credential. Confirm state board requirements and start the endorsement process before your offer letter is issued.
Request a support letter covering all TN criteria
Your employer's TN support letter must explicitly state that the role is a specialty occupation, your degree matches the position, and your duties align with the Nursing Instructor category. Gaps in this letter are a common reason CBP requests additional documentation.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers sponsoring work visas
Filtering for institutions with recent visa filing experience cuts your outreach time significantly. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with active H-1B visa and other visa sponsorship backgrounds, helping you prioritize schools already experienced with sponsoring international workers. For TN sponsorship, Canadian applicants can present the employer's support letter directly at a U.S. port of entry, while Mexican applicants apply through a U.S. consulate—making institutions familiar with visa processes ideal targets.
Prepare for CBP questions on teaching versus clinical duties
Canadian applicants processing at the border should expect CBP officers to ask whether the role is primarily instructional or clinical. Have your offer letter and course syllabi ready to demonstrate the teaching function of the position.
Nursing Instructor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Nursing Instructor role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Nursing Instructors fall under the College category in the USMCA TN occupation list, which covers teaching positions at post-secondary institutions. The role must be primarily instructional, your employer must be an accredited institution, and you must hold at least a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Purely clinical or bedside roles without a teaching component do not qualify under this category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Nursing Instructor positions?
TN is significantly more practical for Nursing Instructors than H-1B. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and Canadian applicants can receive approval at a port of entry the same day with the right documents. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance, a lottery selection, and I-129 filing fees. For a role that clearly fits the USMCA occupation list, TN is the faster and more reliable path.
Do I need an active U.S. RN license to get TN status as a Nursing Instructor?
TN classification itself does not require a U.S. RN license, but most accredited nursing programs require faculty to hold licensure in the state where they teach. Confirm the specific requirements with your prospective employer before your offer is finalized. Starting the state licensure endorsement process early prevents delays between your TN approval and your actual start date.
Where can I find Nursing Instructor jobs that include TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards do not filter for TN-specific sponsorship history, which makes it difficult to identify receptive employers. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you find institutions with active TN and H-1B filing records so you spend time on employers already familiar with the sponsorship process rather than educating every hiring manager from scratch.
What happens if my Nursing Instructor TN status is tied to one institution and I want to change employers?
TN status is employer-specific. If you accept a position at a different institution, your new employer must provide a fresh support letter documenting how the role meets TN criteria. Canadian citizens can process this change at a port of entry. Mexican citizens must return to a U.S. consulate for a new visa stamp. You cannot simply transfer your existing TN to the new employer.
