Secure your NCLEX pass and state license first
TN visa status for nurses requires a current U.S. RN license in the state where you'll work. Without it, no employer can file your petition. Start the licensing process in your target state before reaching out to clinical education departments.
Target academic medical centers with education departments
Hospital systems with affiliated nursing schools, like those connected to university health networks, run in-house clinical education teams that hire instructors directly. These employers already have TN filing experience and understand the Nurse category's documentation requirements.
Frame your clinical specialty to match open instructor roles
Nursing instructor postings often specify a clinical area, such as ICU, NICU, or med-surg. Tailoring your application materials to reflect your specialty reduces employer hesitation about whether your background satisfies the TN Nurse category's qualifying credential requirement.
Confirm the employer will write a TN support letter
Before accepting an offer, verify that HR can produce a TN support letter stating your job title, duties, and that the role requires professional nursing knowledge. Some smaller employers have filed TN petitions before but lack a template; give them the CBP-required elements upfront.
Search for TN-sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Clinical Nursing Instructor openings by employers with recent visa filings. This cuts the time spent vetting employers who are unfamiliar with the TN process or who confuse it with H-1B visa requirements.
Prepare for Mexican TN applicants' consular filing path
Mexican nationals cannot use the Canadian port-of-entry shortcut. You'll apply through a U.S. consulate and face the annual TN allocation limit. Start your consular appointment scheduling early, and have your credential evaluation and state license ready before your interview date.
Clinical Nursing Instructor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Clinical Nursing Instructor role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Clinical Nursing Instructors qualify under the TN visa's Nurse category, which covers registered nurses and nurse educators who hold a valid U.S. state RN license and a qualifying degree. The role must require professional nursing knowledge, which clinical instruction positions typically satisfy, as long as your employer's support letter accurately describes your duties.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for nursing instructor positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian nationals, so your employer can file at any point in the year and expect a decision at the port of entry the same day. H-1B requires entering a lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate and a six-month wait before work can begin. For Canadian and Mexican RNs pursuing instructor roles, TN is a faster, more predictable path.
Where can I find Clinical Nursing Instructor jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for TN-eligible roles. You can filter by job title and identify employers with recent visa filings, so you're not applying blind to postings that may not support the TN category for nursing educators.
What documents does my employer need to file my TN petition for a nursing instructor role?
Your employer needs to produce a signed support letter stating your job title, a description of duties confirming the role requires professional nursing knowledge, your start date, and your compensation arrangement. You'll also need to bring your valid U.S. state RN license, your nursing degree or official transcripts, and a valid passport. Canadian applicants present these directly at a port of entry.
Can I work as a Clinical Nursing Instructor on TN status while pursuing a permanent nursing faculty position?
TN is a nonimmigrant status and does not allow dual intent, meaning you can't formally pursue a green card while on TN without risking your status on renewal. You can continue renewing TN status indefinitely as long as you maintain qualifying employment, but applying for permanent residence through employment-based categories typically requires switching to a different visa class.
