- Serve as a student advocate — ensuring every child's voice is heard and their needs are met
- Facilitate family meetings, home visits, and community outreach as needed
- Support crisis assessment, safety planning, and de-escalation in collaboration with the school team
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation in compliance with COMAR, HIPAA, and agency standards
- Drive cultural transformation efforts by championing a trauma-informed, family-centered school culture
What We're Looking For
✔ Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program (required)
✔ Active licensure in Maryland (LCSW-C, LCSW, LMSW, or working toward full licensure)
✔ 2–5 years of experience in a school-based, child welfare, or community-based setting
✔ Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, IDEA, and 504 regulations
✔ Strong assessment, counseling, and case management skills
✔ Familiarity with COMAR and Maryland child welfare regulations
✔ Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for home and community visits

Verify your MSW meets TN requirements
TN classification for Social Workers requires a master's degree in social work, not just a bachelor's. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican MSW credential maps to a U.S. master's-level qualification before approaching employers about sponsorship.
Target public school districts directly
Public school districts file TN paperwork in-house through their HR departments and don't rely on outside counsel for routine cases. Identify districts with established international hiring records by checking their job postings for language about work authorization support.
Gather state licensure documentation early
Most states require a licensed clinical social worker or school social worker credential before you can practice. Start your licensure application as soon as you have a job offer, since processing delays can hold up your TN filing.
Distinguish TN from H-1B when talking to employers
School districts unfamiliar with TN visas often assume all work authorization involves H-1B lottery risk. Clarify that TN requires no lottery and no cap wait for Canadians. For Canadian applicants, the employer prepares a support letter that you present directly at the U.S. border or port of entry—no government filing required. For Mexican applicants, the employer prepares a support letter that you submit with your application at a U.S. consulate. This streamlined process is one of TN's key advantages over other visa categories.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring districts
Search Migrate Mate to identify school districts and nonprofits with active TN visa sponsorship history for social work roles. Filtering by employer type saves weeks of cold outreach to organizations that don't support international candidates.
Prepare your support letter before the border/consulate interview
Once an employer commits, you can prepare your TN application packet right away. Have your degree transcripts, credential evaluation, and job offer letter ready. For Canadians, your employer will provide a support letter to present at the U.S. border or port of entry. For Mexicans, your employer will provide a support letter to submit with your application at a U.S. consulate. Move quickly once everything is assembled.

Find School Social Worker JobsSchool Social Worker TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does School Social Worker qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes. Social Worker is a listed TN occupation under USMCA, and school-based roles qualify when the position requires a master's degree in social work. Roles that accept a bachelor's degree alone do not meet the specialty occupation standard for TN classification, so the job description must specify MSW-level requirements.
How does TN visa sponsorship for this role compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no USCIS petition requirement. For school social work, that means a Canadian professional can present an employer support letter at a port of entry and potentially enter the same day. H-1B requires lottery selection, USCIS filing, and a wait that can span years, making TN substantially faster for eligible nationals.
Which employers typically sponsor TN visas for school social workers?
Public school districts, county education offices, and nonprofit mental health organizations contracted with schools are the primary sponsors. Larger urban districts are more experienced with work visa sponsorship and may handle TN applications in-house. Smaller districts may need guidance preparing the required support letter and navigating the TN visa application process at a U.S. consulate (for Mexican nationals) or port of entry (for Canadian nationals).
Where can I find School Social Worker jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface TN-eligible roles and employers with sponsorship history for Canadian and Mexican professionals. General job boards don't filter by visa type, so you'll spend significant time identifying whether a school district has sponsored TN workers before. Migrate Mate narrows that search to employers already set up to support your application.
Do I need state licensure before my employer can file TN paperwork?
Not necessarily before filing, but you'll typically need it before you can legally practice. Some states issue a provisional license that allows supervised work while your full license processes. Your employer's HR team and the state licensing board govern this timeline independently of USCIS, so start both processes as soon as your job offer is confirmed.
