Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Assistant Teacher
Verify your degree aligns with the role
TN classification for teachers requires a degree directly related to the subject you'll teach or supervise. A general education degree supporting an assistant teacher role in a specialized subject area may draw scrutiny from CBP, so prepare a degree-to-role rationale in writing before any interview.
Target school districts with documented TN history
Public school districts in border states and large metro areas have more experience navigating TN sponsorship paperwork than smaller private schools. Ask HR departments directly whether they've sponsored TN workers before and whether their legal counsel handles USMCA filings in-house.
Request a support letter covering all TN elements
Your employer's offer letter must explicitly state the position title, educational requirements, your start date, and that the role is temporary in nature. Missing any of these elements can result in a CBP denial at the port of entry, even with a signed contract in hand.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready Assistant Teacher jobs
Search Migrate Mate to identify Assistant Teacher openings filtered for TN visa sponsorship. This saves you from applying to schools that have never sponsored USMCA workers and don't understand what the filing process involves.
Understand Mexicans' consular processing timeline before accepting offers
Mexican citizens cannot self-petition at the border like Canadians can. You'll schedule a consular interview in Mexico, which can add several weeks to your start date. Negotiate your start date with the employer after you've confirmed your earliest available appointment slot.
Prepare state teaching credential documentation separately from your TN packet
Some states require teaching assistants to hold a state-issued paraprofessional credential or pass a certification exam. This is a state licensing requirement independent of your TN status, and schools will ask for proof of eligibility before extending a formal offer.

Find Assistant Teacher JobsAssistant Teacher TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Teacher role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in education or a directly related field and the employer documents this requirement in the offer letter. Roles classified as teaching aides or paraprofessionals that only require an associate degree or high school diploma typically do not meet the TN specialty occupation threshold, so confirming the job's educational requirements upfront is essential.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Assistant Teachers compare to H-1B?
TN visa sponsorship is faster and far more predictable for this role. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and no petition filing with USCIS for Canadians crossing at the border. H-1B requires a lottery selection that happens once a year in April, meaning you could wait over a year before starting work. For a school district trying to hire before September, TN is the practical option.
Can I find Assistant Teacher jobs that already support TN visa sponsorship?
Many school districts are unfamiliar with TN sponsorship requirements, which makes targeting the right employers critical. Migrate Mate lists Assistant Teacher positions filtered for TN visa sponsorship, helping you focus on schools and institutions that have already committed to supporting USMCA-eligible candidates rather than educating HR departments from scratch during your application.
What happens to my TN status if the school year ends and my contract isn't renewed?
TN status is tied to your employer and the specific role described in your offer letter. If your contract ends and isn't renewed, your authorized stay under TN terminates with it. You'd need a new offer letter and a new TN filing to continue working in the U.S. TN status does not include a grace period comparable to H-1B's 60-day window, so plan accordingly.
Can a Canadian Assistant Teacher apply for TN at any port of entry?
Yes, Canadian citizens can apply for TN status at any land port of entry or international airport with a pre-clearance facility. Bringing a complete packet, including the offer letter, your degree credentials, and any state paraprofessional certifications, significantly reduces the risk of a CBP officer requesting additional documentation or deferring your entry for secondary review.
