INTRODUCTION
The Center for Academic Excellence/Writing Center (CAE/WC) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, invites applicants for a faculty position, at the Instructor or Assistant Professor rank (depending on qualifications).
Job Description
We seek a faculty member to teach academic, scientific, and professional writing and academic skills to graduate students primarily pursuing degrees in health care and/or biomedical science. Candidates with experience in writing centers and writing instruction, and/or teaching academic skills (such as test-taking strategy, board prep, and/or active learning study strategies) are invited to apply. While candidates with training in either of these areas are encouraged to apply, we hope to identify a candidate who will be interested in developing a career as both a writing instructor and learning specialist.

When comfortable with the institution’s student population and curricular expectations, the faculty member will also conduct seminars on studying, test taking and writing skills for academic and professional success to those enrolled in health-related and biomedical science degree programs and faculty in our six colleges: Dental Medicine, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Graduate Studies. The successful candidate will join our other five full-time CAE/WC faculty and collaborate to enhance the writing and learning of our students. The position is for those interested in a rewarding career teaching advanced, highly motivated students one-on-one, working alongside colleagues who foster collaborative learning and effective, compassionate communication. Our department is also home to the university-wide Office of Humanities, so applicants with an interest in medical or health humanities would find opportunities in that realm as well.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Assistant Professor
Match your credentials to the appointment type
TN college teacher status requires a qualifying academic appointment, not just a teaching role. Verify your offer letter specifies a faculty position at a regionally accredited institution before your employer begins the sponsorship process.
Get your foreign degree evaluated early
Canadian and Mexican degrees are generally recognized, but hiring departments often need a U.S. credential evaluation for tenure-track applications. Request a course-by-course evaluation before your on-campus interview to avoid delays at the offer stage.
Target institutions with existing international faculty
Research universities and doctoral-granting institutions file TN petitions regularly and have dedicated international faculty coordinators. Departments with existing Canadian or Mexican faculty on staff are significantly more likely to move quickly through the sponsorship paperwork.
Clarify adjunct versus tenure-track status with HR
TN status covers qualifying academic appointments, but some institutions treat adjunct contracts differently in their international hiring process. Confirm with HR whether your specific appointment type triggers their standard TN filing workflow before accepting any offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find departments actively sponsoring TN visas
Search Migrate Mate to identify academic employers with recent visa filings, so you can prioritize departments already experienced with visa sponsorship rather than educating HR from scratch.
Prepare your CBP package before crossing the border
Canadian nationals can obtain TN status at a port of entry without a prior petition. Bring your offer letter, proof of Canadian citizenship, degree transcripts, and a clear written summary of your duties to present to the CBP officer.

Find Assistant Professor JobsAssistant Professor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Assistant Professor role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. The TN visa includes a college and university teacher category under USMCA, which covers tenure-track and qualifying faculty appointments at regionally accredited institutions. Your offer letter must clearly describe an academic faculty role. Administrative positions with incidental teaching duties typically do not qualify under this category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Assistant Professor positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian nationals, making it far more predictable for academic hiring timelines. H-1B requires a cap-subject petition with lottery selection and a six-month wait. For Assistant Professor roles, TN is generally faster to obtain and renew, though it does not lead to permanent residence the way an employer-sponsored green card process can.
Can Mexican nationals get TN status for an Assistant Professor job?
Yes, but the process differs from Canada. Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than at a port of entry. The appointment requires the same documentation as the Canadian process, including an offer letter from an accredited institution, proof of Mexican citizenship, and evidence of qualifying credentials.
Where can I find Assistant Professor jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can search for Assistant Professor and other academic faculty positions filtered by employers familiar with the TN college and university teacher category, which makes it easier to target departments that won't require you to explain the visa from scratch.
What documents does my sponsoring institution need to file for TN status?
Your employer will typically need your offer letter, your proof of Canadian or Mexican citizenship, transcripts or credential evaluations confirming your degree qualifications, and a written description of your duties. Canadian nationals can present these documents directly to a CBP officer at the border. Mexican nationals submit them as part of the consular visa application package.
