The anticipated schedule follows the academic calendar and is approximately 8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m. each school day (including a 30-minute break for lunch), with flexibility for occasional meetings or crisis support as needed.

Verify your degree meets TN requirements
TN visa classification for School Counselors requires a master's degree in counseling, psychology, or a closely related field. A bachelor's degree alone won't qualify, even with years of experience. Check that your credential evaluation reflects this level before applying.
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
Canadian and Mexican degrees must be assessed by a NACES-member evaluation service to confirm U.S. equivalency at the master's level. Some school districts require this document before extending a formal offer, so complete it early in your search.
Target public school districts with HR compliance teams
Large K-12 districts and state university systems have in-house HR staff experienced with TN filings. Smaller private schools often lack this infrastructure and may hesitate on sponsorship without guidance, so prioritize employers with established international hiring processes.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-sponsoring employers
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN sponsorship for counseling roles. Migrate Mate filters School Counselor openings by TN visa eligibility, connecting you directly with districts and institutions that have sponsored this category before.
Confirm your state license transfers before the offer
Most states require a separate school counselor license issued by the state's education board, and many don't have reciprocity agreements with Canadian provinces. Start the licensure application in your target state before your employer submits the TN filing.
Prepare a clear job duty letter for CBP or consular review
Your employer's support letter must explicitly tie the School Counselor duties to the TN specialty occupation definition. Vague descriptions referencing only student support or administrative tasks without mentioning the required degree field are a common reason CBP officers ask follow-up questions.
School Counselor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the School Counselor role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, School Counselor is a recognized TN visa occupation under USMCA. The position must require a master's degree in counseling, psychology, or a related discipline. Roles framed around general student support or social work without a degree requirement tied to counseling may not meet the specialty occupation threshold that USCIS and CBP apply.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for School Counselor roles?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so eligible candidates can receive approval at a port of entry on the day of travel. H-1B visa requires entering a random lottery each spring with selection odds well below 50 percent. For counseling roles in education, TN is far more accessible and predictable for both the employer and the candidate.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your sponsoring employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that confirms your job title, the master's degree requirement, your duties, and the TN specialty occupation being claimed. Canadian citizens present this letter directly at a port of entry. Mexican nationals submit it as part of a consular visa application package at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
Where can I find School Counselor jobs that already support TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. The platform lists School Counselor roles specifically filtered for TN visa eligibility, so you're applying to employers who have already indicated willingness to sponsor rather than spending time on cold outreach to districts unfamiliar with the TN process.
Does a Canadian school counselor license satisfy U.S. state licensure requirements?
No. U.S. states issue their own school counselor licenses through each state's Department of Education, and provincial Canadian credentials are not automatically recognized. Most states require a U.S.-based internship component or a state-specific exam. You'll need to apply for licensure in your target state separately, and this process can take several months to complete.
