Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Student Advisor
Verify your credential category before applying
Student Advisor roles can qualify under different TN categories depending on your background. A degree in counseling, social work, or education each maps to a distinct USMCA occupation category, so confirm which one your credentials support before targeting employers.
Prepare a qualifying occupation letter now
Your employer needs a support letter tying your Student Advisor duties to the specific TN category you're entering under. Draft a role description that maps your daily responsibilities to USMCA professional criteria before you receive an offer.
Search TN-specific job listings through Migrate Mate
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type. Migrate Mate lets you search Student Advisor roles by employers actively offering TN visa sponsorship, so you're not cold-approaching companies unfamiliar with the process.
Get official transcripts translated and evaluated early
Mexican professionals applying for TN status must present degree documentation in English to CBP or at a consulate. Foreign credential evaluations from a NACES-member agency can take several weeks, so start that process before you finalize your job search timeline.

Find Student Advisor JobsStudent Advisor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Student Advisor role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but the qualifying category depends on your academic background and the specific duties of the role. Advisors with degrees in counseling or social work may qualify under the Social Worker category. Those in administrative or enrollment advising roles may qualify under College/University Administrator. Your job offer letter must tie the duties explicitly to one USMCA category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Student Advisor positions?
TN has no annual cap and no lottery, so you're not competing for a limited number of slots each spring. H-1B requires an employer to file months in advance and enter a randomized selection process. With TN, Canadian professionals can often begin work within days of receiving a job offer, and Mexican nationals apply directly at a U.S. consulate without waiting for USCIS approval.
Where can I find Student Advisor employers who offer TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. You can filter Student Advisor listings by employers who actively support TN visa sponsorship, which filters out the time you'd otherwise spend reaching out to employers who aren't familiar with or willing to support the TN process.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a signed support letter that describes your specific job duties, states your TN occupational category, confirms your salary, and establishes your Canadian or Mexican citizenship. This letter is presented at the port of entry for Canadians or submitted with a DS-160 for Mexican nationals applying at a U.S. consulate. The employer does not file a petition with USCIS.
Can a Mexican Student Advisor apply for TN status the same way a Canadian can?
No. Canadian professionals present documentation directly at a U.S. port of entry and can receive TN status on the spot. Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and attend an interview, which adds lead time to the process. Both paths require the same employer support letter and qualifying credentials, but the filing route and timeline differ significantly.
