Verify your MLS degree meets TN standards
The TN category requires a degree in library science specifically. A master's in information science or a related field may qualify, but confirm the field name on your transcript matches what CBP expects for the Librarian category before applying.
Target institutions with active library hiring
Public university systems, county library networks, law firms, and hospital systems hire Reference Librarians with predictable annual cycles. These employers are structurally familiar with professional visa processes and more likely to provide the employer support letter TN requires.
Request a detailed employer support letter early
Your employer's letter must confirm the professional nature of the role, your qualifications, and the terms of employment. A vague letter is one of the most common reasons CBP asks follow-up questions. Ask the hiring manager to be specific about your duties.
Understand the Canadian versus Mexican filing difference
Canadian citizens can present TN documents directly at a U.S. land border or airport and get same-day approval. Mexican citizens must schedule a consular visa interview, which adds weeks to the timeline. Factor this into your start date negotiation with the employer.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers open to TN sponsorship
Search Migrate Mate to identify Reference Librarian roles where employers are already sponsoring TN visa professionals. This filters out positions where you'd spend weeks in conversations only to learn sponsorship isn't possible.
Align your role description with the USMCA Librarian definition
The USMCA Librarian category covers professional library services requiring a specialized degree. If your role has a hybrid title like Research Analyst or Knowledge Manager, work with your employer to frame the job description around core librarian duties to avoid CBP classification questions.

Find Reference Librarian JobsReference Librarian TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Reference Librarian role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Librarian is a listed occupation under the USMCA TN visa category. To qualify, you need a job offer for a professional librarian role and a master's degree in library science or a closely related field. Your employer provides a support letter confirming the professional nature of the position, and CBP makes the final determination at the port of entry.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Reference Librarian jobs?
The TN visa is significantly more practical for Reference Librarians. H-1B requires entering an annual lottery with no guaranteed selection, and the process takes months. TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadians can receive approval at the border the same day they apply. Mexican citizens need a consular interview, but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that includes your job title, a description of your duties, confirmation that the role requires a library science degree, your anticipated start date, and the terms of employment. CBP reviews this letter alongside your credentials. A thorough, specific letter reduces the chance of additional questions at the port of entry.
Where can I find Reference Librarian jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and lets you search for Reference Librarian roles where employers are open to sponsoring TN professionals. Standard job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, which means you can spend significant time pursuing roles where TN sponsorship was never on the table. Migrate Mate removes that uncertainty upfront.
Can I switch employers while on a TN visa as a Reference Librarian?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. If you change jobs, your new employer must support a fresh TN application before you begin work. Canadians can handle this at a port of entry. Mexican citizens need to return to a U.S. consulate. You cannot simply transfer your existing TN to a new employer the way some other visa categories allow.
