Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Elementary School Teacher
Verify your teaching credential transfers
Your home-country teaching certificate doesn't automatically satisfy U.S. state licensure requirements. Identify which states offer a credential evaluation pathway before applying, since some grant provisional licenses to internationally trained teachers while TN sponsorship is pending.
Target districts with documented TN history
Rural and suburban school districts with chronic teacher shortages actively sponsor TN educators, especially in STEM and bilingual elementary roles. Look for employers with recent visa sponsorship experience, as districts experienced with work visa processes are more likely to support TN applications for qualified teaching candidates.
Secure your state teaching license early
Most school districts won't extend a job offer without at least a provisional state teaching license in hand. Start the licensure application in your target state before your job search, since processing can take several months and delays the entire sponsorship timeline.
Clarify the letter of recognition requirement
TN status for teachers requires a baccalaureate degree in education or the specific subject area you'll teach. If your degree is in a different field, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized agency and ask the hiring district whether their counsel will support a subject-match argument to USCIS.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring school employers
Filtering job postings by TN visa sponsorship saves weeks of outreach to districts that won't sponsor international teachers. Migrate Mate lets you search Elementary School Teacher roles specifically filtered for TN visa sponsorship, so every application goes to an employer already prepared to file.
Confirm Mexican TN cap timing with your offer
Mexican nationals have a 5,500 annual TN allocation. Apply early in the fiscal year and confirm with your hiring district that HR has budgeted for consular processing timelines, which typically run longer than the Canadian port-of-entry method.

Find Elementary School Teacher JobsElementary School Teacher TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Elementary School Teacher role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Elementary School Teacher is a named occupation on the USMCA TN eligible professions list. You must hold a baccalaureate degree in education or in the subject area you will teach. The degree field matters: a general liberal arts degree without an education component may not satisfy the requirement without a detailed credential evaluation.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for elementary school teachers?
TN is generally faster and more predictable for this role. There is no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian applicants, and no lengthy petition process waiting on USCIS adjudication windows. Canadian teachers can obtain TN status at a port of entry the same day an offer letter is signed, while H-1B requires filing months in advance with no guaranteed selection.
Which school employers actually sponsor TN visas for teachers?
Public school districts, charter networks, private independent schools, and international schools all sponsor TN teachers. Districts in states with persistent teacher shortages, such as Texas, Arizona, and rural Midwest states, sponsor more frequently. Use Migrate Mate to search Elementary School Teacher positions specifically filtered for TN visa sponsorship rather than applying broadly and asking afterward.
What documents do Canadian teachers need at the border for TN entry?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, a signed offer letter from the school district describing your role and salary, proof of your education degree, and your state teaching license or credential evaluation. CBP officers at the port of entry adjudicate TN applications on the spot. Bring certified transcripts in case the officer asks for degree verification.
Can a Mexican elementary school teacher apply for TN status, and how does the process differ?
Yes, but Mexican nationals must apply through a U.S. consulate rather than at a port of entry. You'll submit a DS-160, attend a consular interview, and wait for visa issuance before traveling to work. The 5,500 annual TN allocation for Mexican nationals means applying as early as possible in the fiscal year reduces the risk of delays from cap utilization.
