Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner
Verify your NP license transfers cleanly
Most U.S. states require a separate compact or state-specific NP license before you start work. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican NP credential maps to the state where your employer is located before signing any offer.
Request a support letter that names USMCA
Your employer's support letter must explicitly state you are entering under USMCA as a Nurse Practitioner. Letters that use only H-1B or general work visa language cause CBP officers at the border to question eligibility.
Search for TN-ready NP roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Family Practice NP jobs by TN visa sponsorship history, so you skip employers who have never filed and focus on roles where sponsorship is already built into the hiring process.
Prepare your CGFNS credential package early
Some U.S. employers and state licensing boards require a Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) evaluation for internationally trained nurses. Starting this process before you have a job offer cuts weeks off your start date.
Clarify TN renewal timing before accepting the offer
TN status is granted in up to three-year increments with no cap on renewals. Negotiate your employment agreement to include employer support for renewals from the start, so you aren't renegotiating every three years.

Find Family Practice Nurse Practitioner JobsFamily Practice Nurse Practitioner TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Family Practice Nurse Practitioner qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes. Nurse Practitioner is a listed USMCA professional category, and Family Practice NPs fall within it. You need an active NP license from your home province or Mexico, a job offer from a U.S. employer in a family practice or primary care setting, and a support letter that names USMCA explicitly. CBP adjudicates the TN at the border for Canadians.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Family Practice NPs?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and Canadians can receive approval at the port of entry the same day they apply. H-1B selection is random and limited to 85,000 petitions annually. For NPs already licensed and with a U.S. job offer, TN is almost always the faster and more predictable path to starting work.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer prepares a support letter on company letterhead that identifies the position as Nurse Practitioner under USMCA, describes your duties, states the employment is temporary, and confirms your salary and start date. You bring that letter, your NP license, your degree credentials, and your passport to the port of entry or U.S. consulate.
Where can I find Family Practice NP jobs that already offer TN sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN and other work visa job searches. You can filter by visa type and role so you're only seeing employers with recent visa filings—companies experienced with work visa sponsorship processes—rather than clinics that will need to learn the TN process from the ground up during your interview.
Can Mexican Family Practice NPs get TN status the same way Canadians can?
Mexican citizens qualify for TN under USMCA but follow a different process. Instead of applying at the border, Mexicans must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and attend an interview. There is also a separate annual allocation for Mexican TN workers, so timing and consulate appointment availability both affect the process.
