Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Marriage And Family Therapist
Verify your state licensure before applying
TN status authorizes you to work, but states independently control who can practice therapy. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican credentials satisfy the licensing board requirements in your target state before accepting any offer.
Target group practices over solo clinicians
Group practices, hospital systems, and community mental health centers have HR infrastructure to handle TN documentation. Solo practitioners rarely have experience with employer-side filing obligations and often withdraw offers mid-process.
Secure a detailed offer letter before filing
CBP officers at the border require an offer letter specifying your job title as Marriage and Family Therapist, your duties, your employer's address, and your start date. A vague letter is the most common reason for TN denials.
Search for sponsoring employers using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Marriage and Family Therapist roles by employers already experienced with TN visa sponsorship, so you spend time on opportunities where the employer understands what the filing involves.
Prepare credential evaluation documents in advance
If your degree is from a Canadian or Mexican institution, get a credential evaluation confirming it is equivalent to a U.S. master's degree in marriage and family therapy. CBP will want this alongside your transcripts.
Understand the difference between Canadian and Mexican TN processing
Canadian citizens apply directly at a U.S. port of entry with no prior approval needed. Mexican citizens must schedule a consular visa interview, which adds weeks to the timeline and requires additional documentation preparation.

Find Marriage And Family Therapist JobsMarriage And Family Therapist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Marriage and Family Therapist role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Marriage and Family Therapist is a listed USMCA professional category. You need a master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a closely related counseling field, plus a qualifying job offer from a U.S. employer. CBP makes the final determination at the port of entry or consulate.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Marriage and Family Therapist positions?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-month wait for approval. Canadian citizens can begin work within hours of a successful port-of-entry admission. H-1B requires an employer to enter a lottery, wait months for USCIS adjudication, and pay significantly higher filing fees. For most Canadian and Mexican therapists, TN is faster and more predictable.
Do employers need to file paperwork with USCIS to sponsor a TN Marriage and Family Therapist?
Canadian TN applicants do not require prior USCIS approval. The employer prepares a support letter and you present it directly to CBP at the border. Mexican citizens need a TN visa issued by a U.S. consulate, where the employer's documentation still plays a central role, but USCIS is not involved in either pathway.
Where can I find Marriage and Family Therapist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-eligible roles. You can filter Marriage and Family Therapist listings by employers who actively support TN sponsorship, which removes the guesswork of approaching employers unfamiliar with the visa category.
Can I switch employers while on TN status as a Marriage and Family Therapist?
Yes, but TN status is tied to a specific employer. If you change jobs, your new employer must provide a fresh support letter and you must obtain new TN authorization before starting work, either at a port of entry if you are Canadian or through a new consular appointment if you are Mexican.
