TN Visa Family Counselor Jobs

Verify your credential meets TN standards
TN eligibility for Family Counselors requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in counseling, psychology, or social work. A degree in a loosely related field like sociology often fails the specialty occupation test at the border, so confirm your transcript reflects the qualifying discipline before applying.
Target employers with active state licensure support
Many U.S. states require a Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist credential before you can practice independently. Prioritize employers who sponsor provisional licensure during your supervised hours, since your TN approval does not substitute for state clinical licensing requirements.
Request a TN-specific offer letter from your employer
Your offer letter must state your job title as Family Counselor, your qualifying degree, and that the position is temporary in nature. Generic offer letters omit TN-specific language and create delays at the port of entry or during USCIS adjudication for Mexicans filing Form I-129.
Understand the Mexican TN cap and plan your timeline
Mexican nationals are subject to a 5,500 annual TN allocation and must file Form I-129 with USCIS rather than applying at the border. Build at least 90 days of processing time into your start date to account for USCIS adjudication before your intended employment begins.
Search for TN-sponsored Family Counselor roles on Migrate Mate
Filtering for employers who understand TN requirements saves significant time. Migrate Mate lets you search Family Counselor roles specifically tagged for TN visa sponsorship, connecting you with employers already familiar with the USMCA professional categories and the clinical documentation they need to provide.
Prepare a Canadian border application packet in advance
Canadian citizens apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry with no appointment needed. Bring your degree transcripts, a credential evaluation if your institution is outside Canada, and your signed offer letter to avoid secondary inspection due to incomplete documentation.

Find Family Counselor JobsFamily Counselor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Family Counselor role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Family Counselor is a recognized USMCA professional category that qualifies for TN visa status. The position must require a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in counseling, psychology, or social work, and the employer's offer letter must reflect that the role matches that qualifying field. A general mental health support role without a clear degree requirement will not meet the standard.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Family Counselors?
The TN visa has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at a port of entry the same day you travel. The H-1B requires employer sponsorship, a lottery selection, and months of waiting. For Canadian and Mexican Family Counselors with a qualifying degree and a U.S. job offer, the TN is a faster and more predictable path to employment than the H-1B.
Can I use Migrate Mate to find Family Counselor jobs with TN sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for roles that come with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter for Family Counselor positions where the employer already understands TN requirements, which means you spend less time explaining your status and more time advancing through the hiring process.
Does my Canadian or Mexican counseling license transfer to the U.S. under TN status?
No. TN status grants you permission to work in the U.S., but it does not transfer your provincial or national professional license. Each U.S. state has its own clinical licensing board, and most require supervised practice hours, an exam such as the NCE or NCMHCE, and a separate state application. Many employers who sponsor TN status for Family Counselors will support you through the provisional licensure process while you complete those requirements.
What happens to my TN status if my Family Counselor employer closes or terminates my role?
Your TN status is tied to the specific employer and role listed in your approval. If that employment ends, your authorized TN period technically lapses, though there is a practical grace period in which you may seek new sponsorship and file for a new TN. Mexican nationals will need to file a new Form I-129 with USCIS, while Canadian citizens can apply at a port of entry with a new offer letter from a qualifying employer.
