Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Plastic Surgeon
Verify your U.S. medical licensure early
TN status for Plastic Surgeons requires active licensure in the state where you'll practice. Start the state medical board application at least six months before your target start date, as credentialing timelines vary significantly by state.
Target hospital systems with international recruitment pipelines
Academic medical centers and large health systems regularly sponsor TN visas for physicians and surgeons. Prioritize employers whose HR teams have processed TN petitions before, since the filing process differs significantly from the H-1B they're more familiar with.
Search TN-sponsored plastic surgery openings on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by TN visa sponsorship eligibility, so you can focus exclusively on Plastic Surgeon roles where employers are already prepared to support the filing process without lengthy internal approvals.
Clarify the employment structure before accepting an offer
TN status requires a direct employer-employee relationship. Independent contractor arrangements and locum tenens structures can invalidate your TN eligibility, so confirm with the employer that the role is a W-2 position before proceeding.
Prepare a specialty occupation support letter with your employer
CBP and consular officers require a detailed employer support letter for TN approval. The letter must specify your duties, your Canadian or Mexican medical degree, and explain why the role requires a surgeon's qualifications rather than a general practitioner's.
Canadian applicants can use port-of-entry processing strategically
If you're Canadian, you can apply for TN status directly at a land border or preclearance airport without scheduling a consular appointment. Bringing complete documentation, including your offer letter and degree credentials, typically results in same-day adjudication.

Find Plastic Surgeon JobsPlastic Surgeon TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Plastic Surgeon role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Plastic Surgery falls within the physician and surgeon category recognized under USMCA. The role must require your medical degree and surgical specialization, and you must hold or be in the process of obtaining a valid state medical license. Academic and clinical hospital positions typically satisfy these requirements, while purely cosmetic practice arrangements occasionally face additional scrutiny.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Plastic Surgeons?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-year wait. H-1B selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots annually, making it unreliable for surgical specialists. TN renewals are indefinite as long as you maintain qualifying employment, while H-1B has a six-year statutory limit with extensions requiring employer investment. For most Canadian and Mexican surgeons, TN is the more predictable path.
How do I find Plastic Surgeon jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most employers don't advertise TN sponsorship explicitly because the process is less familiar to HR teams than H-1B. Migrate Mate surfaces Plastic Surgeon roles by TN visa eligibility, letting you identify employers already set up to support the filing. Focusing on academic medical centers and large hospital networks also increases your chances of finding teams with prior TN experience.
Can Mexican citizens apply for TN status as a Plastic Surgeon?
Yes, but the process differs from Canadian applicants. Mexican nationals must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and are subject to a 5,500 annual TN allocation. You'll need your employer's support letter, proof of your surgical qualifications, and evidence of state licensure or a pending license application. Processing timelines vary by consulate location.
What happens to my TN status if I change employers or join a private practice?
TN status is employer-specific. If you move to a new hospital system or join a private surgical group, your new employer must file a fresh TN petition or you must obtain a new TN approval at the port of entry before your start date. Continuing to work under your previous TN after leaving that employer puts your status at risk.
