Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Addiction Counselor
Verify your credentials match TN requirements
TN classification for Addiction Counselors falls under the Social Worker category, which requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in social work or a closely related counseling field. A general psychology or sociology degree may not satisfy the requirement without supplemental documentation.
Research state licensure before targeting employers
Each U.S. state sets its own licensed counselor credentials, and some require CACREP-accredited degrees or supervised hours completed domestically. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican credentials are eligible for reciprocity or endorsement in your target state before applying.
Target employers with existing TN hiring infrastructure
Behavioral health networks, federally qualified health centers, and VA-affiliated treatment programs regularly sponsor TN professionals and understand the documentation process. Search Migrate Mate to find Addiction Counselor roles from employers with active TN visa sponsorship history.
Get a detailed support letter from your employer
Your employer's support letter must specify your job title as Addiction Counselor or equivalent, describe duties tied to the Social Worker TN category, and confirm your degree aligns with the role. A vague letter is the most common reason CBP officers request additional review.
Understand how Mexican TN applicants apply differently
Mexican nationals cannot use the Canadian port-of-entry process. You must apply at a U.S. consulate and receive a visa stamp before entering. Schedule your consular appointment early, as wait times in Mexico City and Monterrey can extend several weeks.
Prepare for credential questions during CBP inspection
Bring original transcripts, your degree certificate, and any provincial or national licensure documents. CBP officers reviewing Social Worker TN cases often ask how your degree program specifically prepared you for addiction counseling, so be ready to explain the connection clearly.

Find Addiction Counselor JobsAddiction Counselor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Addiction Counselor role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Addiction Counselors qualify under the Social Worker TN category, which requires a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in social work or a closely related field. The role must involve duties consistent with professional counseling or social work practice. CBP makes the final determination at the port of entry or consulate, so your employer's support letter and your credentials must align precisely with this category.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Addiction Counselor positions?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at a port of entry the same day for Canadian citizens, making it significantly faster than the H-1B process. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance and is subject to a competitive lottery. For licensed addiction counseling professionals from Canada or Mexico, TN is generally the faster and more predictable route.
What documentation do I need to present as a Canadian Addiction Counselor at the border?
You need your Canadian passport, a detailed employer support letter describing your duties and confirming your TN-qualifying role, your original degree transcripts, your degree certificate, and any relevant provincial licensure credentials. If your degree is in a related field rather than social work directly, bring documentation explaining the connection between your education and addiction counseling practice.
Where can I find Addiction Counselor jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can search for Addiction Counselor positions filtered by TN eligibility, which saves time compared to applying broadly and asking employers about sponsorship during the interview process.
Can my Canadian provincial counseling license transfer to the U.S. for TN purposes?
Provincial licensure supports your TN application but does not automatically satisfy U.S. state licensing requirements. Most states require you to apply for licensure by endorsement or examination after arrival. Some states also require supervised hours completed under a U.S.-licensed supervisor. Check your target state's licensed professional counselor board requirements before accepting an offer.
