Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Dentist
Verify your dental credentials meet TN requirements
TN classification for dentists requires a DDS or DMD degree. If your Canadian or Mexican dental degree uses different nomenclature, get a credential evaluation confirming equivalency before approaching any employer about sponsorship.
Target dental groups with multi-state licensing infrastructure
Dental service organizations and group practices already navigate state licensing boards across multiple jurisdictions. They're more likely to have HR processes ready for TN documentation than a solo private practice encountering it for the first time.
Obtain your state dental license before the job offer stage
Most U.S. states require a separate licensure exam such as the WREB or CDCA. Having an active or pending state license in hand signals to employers you're ready to work, which removes a common hesitation around TN sponsorship timelines.
Clarify the TN support letter scope with your employer
The employer's TN support letter must specify your title, duties, degree, and intended work period. For dentists, CBP officers expect the role description to clearly reflect clinical dental practice, not a generic healthcare or management description.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers actively sponsoring TN visas
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN. Migrate Mate filters dentist roles by verified sponsorship history so you focus only on practices and DSOs already set up to file.
Understand how Mexican TN holders must file through USCIS
Unlike Canadians who can seek TN admission at the port of entry, Mexican citizens must file a petition with USCIS before starting work. Factor this processing timeline into your employment start date negotiations with any prospective employer.

Find Dentist JobsDentist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Dentist role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Dentist is an explicitly listed occupation in the USMCA TN category. You need a DDS or DMD degree and a qualifying job offer from a U.S. employer. General dentists, oral surgeons, and dental specialists with the right credentials all fall within the classification, but your support letter must describe clinical dental duties specifically.
How does TN compare to H-1B for dentists seeking U.S. employment?
TN has no annual cap and no lottery, so you can apply year-round without waiting for a selection result. H-1B requires a lottery entry each spring and involves a longer petition process. For Canadian dentists especially, TN approval can happen the same day at the port of entry, while H-1B processing takes months. The tradeoff is that TN requires maintaining nonimmigrant intent.
How do I find dentist employers who are familiar with TN visa sponsorship?
Most individual dental practices have never filed a TN petition and will need education about the process. Migrate Mate surfaces dentist roles from employers with documented TN sponsorship activity, so you're not spending time convincing practices to start from scratch. Dental service organizations tend to have the most established processes for supporting TN applicants.
Can I start working immediately after a Canadian TN approval at the port of entry?
Yes. Canadian citizens granted TN status at a U.S. port of entry or preclearance location can begin employment the same day. You'll need your employer's support letter, your DDS or DMD credential documentation, and your state dental license or evidence of pending licensure. CBP issues an I-94 confirming your TN status and authorized period of stay.
What happens to my TN status if I change dental employers or practice locations?
TN status is employer-specific. If you change employers, you need a new TN petition or a port of entry application before starting with the new practice. Canadians can handle this at the border, while Mexican TN holders must file a new USCIS petition. Changing practice locations within the same employer group generally doesn't require a new filing, but the support letter should reflect the updated work site. Use Migrate Mate to identify new employers already set up for the TN process if you're planning a transition.
