Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Internist
Verify your medical credentials transfer cleanly
TN visa classification for physicians requires a valid U.S. state medical license or eligibility. Confirm your Canadian or Mexican medical degree meets ECFMG certification requirements before contacting employers, since gaps here stall offers before sponsorship discussions begin.
Target hospital medicine and academic programs first
Academic medical centers and hospitalist programs file TN support letters routinely for internists. Their legal and credentialing teams understand the documentation, reducing delays caused by employers unfamiliar with physician TN requirements under the USMCA.
Search TN-ready internist roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter internist openings by employers with recent visa filings. This cuts time spent approaching employers without demonstrated sponsorship experience and avoids early-stage rejections based on visa unfamiliarity. Employers experienced with work visa processes are more likely to understand TN requirements and support your application.
Clarify subspecialty fit before the offer stage
TN approval for internists is tied to the specific role description, not just your specialty. If your practice includes cardiology or gastroenterology procedures, confirm the offer letter and support documentation reflect your actual duties to avoid CBP questions at entry.
Get the employer support letter right before you travel
Canadian internists are admitted at the port of entry, so a deficient support letter means a same-day denial with no immediate appeal. The letter must specify your internal medicine specialty, the employing entity, and the duration and nature of the engagement.
Account for state licensing timelines in your start date
Most U.S. states require full medical licensure before you can practice, not just before you apply. Negotiate a start date that accommodates your licensing timeline, since CBP can approve your TN status before your license clears, creating a gap in practice eligibility.
Internist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the TN visa cover internists practicing hospital medicine?
Yes. Internists working as hospitalists qualify under the physician category of the USMCA TN classification, provided the role involves direct patient care in internal medicine. The employer's support letter must describe the position as internal medicine practice. General administrative or non-clinical physician roles may not qualify and should be reviewed carefully before filing.
How does TN visa sponsorship for internists compare to H-1B?
TN visa sponsorship is faster and more predictable for internists than H-1B visa. There is no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no I-129 petition filing period to wait through. Canadian internists can be admitted at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires lottery selection and months of USCIS processing, making TN the more practical path for most Canadian and Mexican physicians already licensed in the U.S.
Can a Mexican internist apply for a TN visa at the border like a Canadian?
No. Mexican nationals must apply for TN status at a U.S. consulate in Mexico, not at the border. You will need a valid job offer, employer support letter, proof of Mexican citizenship, and evidence of your medical credentials and U.S. licensure eligibility. Processing timelines depend on the consulate and appointment availability, so plan accordingly before a firm start date is set.
What credentials does an internist need to qualify for TN sponsorship?
You need a medical degree from a recognized institution, ECFMG certification if you graduated from a foreign medical school, completion of an accredited residency in internal medicine, and a valid or pending U.S. state medical license in the state where you will practice. CBP or the consulate will review these documents, and any gap in licensure documentation can result in a denial or request for more information.
Where can I find internist jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter internist openings by employers with a history of TN filings, which saves time compared to reaching out to employers who have no experience sponsoring physician TN visas and are unlikely to move quickly through the offer process.
