Verify your credential maps to TN categories
TN visa status for Advanced Practice Providers requires your specific credential to match a listed USMCA occupation. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants qualify; confirm your licensure aligns before applying to roles.
Target health systems with recent visa filings
Large hospital networks and multi-site health systems have demonstrated experience with visa sponsorship through recent filings, signaling established processes for supporting work visa candidates. Prioritize employers whose job postings explicitly mention TN visa eligibility for APP roles, as these employers are more likely to prepare the required support documentation for the visa application process.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring APP employers
Search Migrate Mate to identify health systems and medical groups actively sponsoring Advanced Practice Providers on TN visas. Filter by role and location to reach employers already familiar with USMCA filing requirements.
Request the support letter before your start date
Your employer must prepare a support letter demonstrating your qualifications and role details before you begin work. Canadian APPs can then present this letter at the U.S. border or port of entry to establish TN status without advance government approval.
Get state licensure in hand before the offer stage
Border officers and consular staff expect to see your active state nursing or PA license at adjudication. Delays in state licensure transfer are the most common reason TN approvals stall for Canadian and Mexican APPs.
Prepare a credential package specific to your APP title
Bundle your NP, PA, or CRNA license, degree transcripts, and a detailed offer letter stating your USMCA-qualifying occupation title. Vague job descriptions are a leading cause of TN refusals for Advanced Practice Provider applicants.
Advanced Practice Provider TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Advanced Practice Provider role qualify for the TN visa?
Yes, if your specific credential fits a listed USMCA professional category. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are recognized TN occupations. Your offer letter must identify your role using the exact USMCA occupation title, and your state license must be active and match the stated position.
How does TN visa sponsorship for APPs compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can start work without waiting for an October 1 effective date. H-1B visa requires USCIS petition approval, takes months, and is subject to lottery selection. For Canadian APPs with a qualifying credential, TN is a faster and more predictable path.
What documentation does a Mexican APP need for TN sponsorship?
Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than a port of entry. You will need a valid DS-160, your USMCA-qualifying credential, an employer support letter specifying your Advanced Practice Provider role, and proof of Mexican citizenship. Processing timelines at consulates vary by location and appointment availability.
Where can I find APP jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lists Advanced Practice Provider positions from employers who actively sponsor TN visas, so you can search by role and location without sorting through listings that exclude non-citizens. Targeting employers with established TN processes shortens the time from offer to approval significantly.
Can I switch APP employers while on a TN visa?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your current employer. When you accept a new APP position, your new employer must prepare a support letter documenting your role, qualifications, and eligibility under the TN category. Canadians can present this letter at a U.S. port of entry for processing before starting with the new organization. Mexicans will need to apply at a U.S. consulate with the employer's support letter.
