Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Psychiatrist
Verify your credentials meet TN requirements
TN classification for psychiatrists requires a medical degree, not just a residency certificate. Confirm your degree is from a recognized institution and obtain a credential evaluation letter from ECFMN if your documents are not in English.
Secure state medical licensure before applying
Most U.S. employers will not extend a formal offer until you hold or are eligible for a state medical license. Start the licensing process in your target state early, as timelines vary widely and some states require USMLE passage.
Target health systems with recent visa filings
Psychiatric group practices and standalone clinics sometimes hesitate on TN sponsorship due to unfamiliarity. Focus outreach on hospital systems and federally qualified health centers, which have established HR and legal processes for work visa sponsorship and are more likely to be experienced with preparing employer support letters for TN applicants.
Use Migrate Mate to find psychiatrist roles with TN sponsorship
Search for psychiatrist positions filtered by TN visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate. The platform surfaces employers already set up to sponsor TN professionals, cutting out the back-and-forth of asking HR cold whether they support the visa category.
Negotiate the offer letter before the employer drafts TN documents
Your TN support letter must specify your role, duties, and credentials. Request a draft before signing the offer so you can flag vague job descriptions that CBP officers may question, such as broad clinical titles that don't clearly map to psychiatry.
Understand the Mexican TN consular appointment timeline
Mexican citizens cannot use the Canadian port-of-entry method and must apply at a U.S. consulate. Consular appointment availability in major Mexican cities can run four to eight weeks out, so plan your start date with that lead time in mind.

Find Psychiatrist JobsPsychiatrist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a psychiatrist role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Psychiatry falls under the physician category in the USMCA TN occupation list. You must hold a medical degree from an accredited institution, have completed your residency, and be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state where you'll practice. A supervising role in research or teaching may have slightly different documentation requirements.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for psychiatrists?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start work as soon as your petition is approved rather than waiting for an October 1 start date. H-1B requires employer registration, a lottery selection, and a six-month wait at minimum. For Mexican psychiatrists, TN has a limited allocation, but demand rarely approaches that ceiling in the medical sector.
Where can I find psychiatrist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter psychiatrist roles specifically by TN visa sponsorship, so you're only seeing employers who have confirmed they can support the visa category. This matters because many general job searches return positions where sponsorship willingness is never confirmed until deep in the hiring process.
Can Canadian psychiatrists apply for TN status at the border without an appointment?
Yes. Canadian citizens can present their TN application package directly at a U.S. port of entry without a prior visa or consular appointment. You'll need your support letter, medical degree, residency completion documentation, and proof of licensure eligibility. CBP officers adjudicate TN petitions on the spot, though complex cases may take longer.
What happens if my TN petition is questioned at a port of entry?
CBP officers can issue a secondary review or deny entry if your documentation is incomplete or your job duties don't clearly match the psychiatry occupation. Common issues include vague offer letters or missing proof of completed residency. If denied, you can reapply immediately with corrected documents, but there's no formal appeal process for port-of-entry TN decisions.
