We currently seek a full-time (1.0 FTE) Core Faculty Physician for our Family Medicine Residency Program. This position is located at our Whittier Clinic (in a vibrant and diverse area just outside of downtown Minneapolis), but future needs could necessitate work at other community clinic locations within Hennepin County.
The successful candidate will be a BC/BE Allopathic or Osteopathic Family Medicine physician with interest in both inpatient (including Obstetrics) and outpatient care and clinical teaching of both residents and medical students. Candidates with a Sports Medicine Fellowship would be strongly considered and could have the ability to have weekly Sports Medicine clinic sessions. The position also requires an academic skillset that includes curriculum development, evaluation, advising, and scholarly activity. Leadership opportunities are available within the residency program as well.
Applicants should have an interest in the care of medically-underserved. Experience in osteopathic manipulative medicine, research or proficiency in the performance of common Family Medicine procedures are desirable but not required. Each faculty member is encouraged to develop an area of expertise to contribute to the research and/or residency curriculum. Core faculty members are expected to complete the Faculty Development Fellowship through the University of Minnesota within the first 2 years of employment.

The program features opportunities in holistic and integrative medicine, women’s health, sports medicine, geriatrics, diabetes education, and international health. We include onsite physical therapy and behavioral health at our Whittier Clinic.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Physician
Verify your medical credentials transfer cleanly
Canadian and Mexican medical degrees must demonstrate U.S. equivalency. Confirm your ECFMG certification and any required state medical board license are in order before approaching employers, since missing credentials are the top reason TN visa petitions stall.
Target hospital systems with recent visa filings
Academic medical centers, VA hospitals, and large health systems regularly sponsor TN physicians. Filter your search to employers with recent visa filings, since their HR and legal teams have experience navigating work visa sponsorship and understand the support letter requirements and credentialing processes for TN status.
Request a support letter that names your specialty explicitly
Your employer's support letter must describe your role as a Physician, reference your qualifying degree, and specify the specialty, such as internal medicine or radiology. A vague letter is one of the most common reasons CBP requests additional documentation at the border.
Use Migrate Mate to find experienced visa sponsors
Searching for Physician roles at employers experienced with visa sponsorship is faster on Migrate Mate, which filters listings by employer visa filing history. You'll find companies already familiar with sponsoring work visas, cutting weeks off your job search.
Understand that Mexicans apply at a U.S. consulate, not the border
Canadian physicians can obtain TN status directly at a port of entry. Mexican nationals must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico before traveling, which adds consular appointment lead time to your planning.
Confirm your employer knows the TN filing is their responsibility
The support letter and TN package must come from the hiring institution. If an employer assumes you file independently, clarify the process early. Employers unfamiliar with TN often confuse it with H-1B visa and underestimate how straightforward the paperwork actually is.
Physician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Physician role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Physician is an explicitly named occupation on the USMCA TN list, which means you don't need to argue specialty occupation eligibility the way you would under H-1B. You must hold a medical degree from a recognized institution and have a qualifying job offer from a U.S. employer, such as a hospital, clinic, or medical group.
How does TN compare to H-1B for physicians?
TN is available to Canadian citizens immediately at a port of entry with no lottery, no annual cap, and no multi-month wait. H-1B requires entering a lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate, then waiting until October 1 of the fiscal year to start work. For Canadian physicians, TN is a faster and more predictable path. Mexican physicians face a consular step but still avoid the H-1B lottery entirely.
Where can I find Physician jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters Physician job listings by TN visa sponsorship, so you're only seeing employers prepared to file. General job boards include many listings where TN eligibility is unclear or the employer has never sponsored an international professional. Starting your search on Migrate Mate reduces the time spent vetting employers who aren't set up to hire TN professionals.
Can I work in a medical residency or fellowship on a TN visa?
TN covers employed Physician roles at qualifying institutions, but residency and fellowship programs are structured differently and may require J-1 visa sponsorship through an accredited graduate medical education program instead. You should confirm with the program director whether TN is acceptable for their specific training position before relying on it as your authorization pathway.
What documents does a Canadian physician need to enter on TN status?
You'll need your Canadian passport, the employer's original support letter describing your Physician role and qualifications, proof of your medical degree, and your ECFMG certification if practicing in a clinical capacity. Some states also require proof of a valid state medical license before CBP will approve the TN. Bring originals, not photocopies, to the port of entry.
