Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Triage Nurse
Verify your NCLEX and license before applying
Canadian and Mexican nurses must hold an active U.S. state RN license or a CGFNS certificate before a TN visa petition can be filed. Start the endorsement process early, state licensing boards often take 8 to 12 weeks to process applications from foreign-trained nurses.
Target hospital systems with dedicated HR immigration teams
Large health systems and regional trauma centers are more likely to have established TN filing workflows. Ask recruiters directly whether their HR team has processed TN petitions for registered nurses before accepting an interview, not after.
Search TN-sponsored triage nurse roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter triage nurse openings by TN visa sponsorship status. This surfaces employers already familiar with the RN category requirements and filters out postings where immigration support is unclear or unavailable.
Clarify the support letter scope before signing
Your employer's TN support letter must confirm your RN credential, the triage nurse job duties, and that the role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Vague letters citing only 'nursing' without referencing your specific triage functions are a common reason CBP requests additional documentation.
Understand Canadian versus Mexican processing differences
Canadian citizens can present TN documentation directly at a port of entry without pre-filing with USCIS. Mexican nationals must apply through a U.S. consulate with Form DS-160. Build consulate appointment lead time into your start date negotiation with the employer.
Document your triage-specific clinical experience separately
General RN experience alone doesn't always satisfy CBP officers reviewing triage nurse petitions. Prepare a supplemental credential summary listing your emergency triage hours, any Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course or Trauma Nursing Core Course certifications, and relevant acuity metrics from prior roles.
Triage Nurse TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the triage nurse role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Triage nurses qualify under the TN visa's registered nurse category, provided you hold an active U.S. state RN license or meet CGFNS certification requirements. The role must involve direct patient assessment and clinical triage functions, a support letter from your employer confirming these duties is required at the port of entry or consulate.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for triage nurses?
The TN visa is significantly faster and more predictable for triage nurses than the H-1B visa. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadian applicants can be approved at a port of entry the same day they present documentation. H-1B requires a March registration period, a random selection process, and months of USCIS processing before you can start work.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN petition?
Your employer provides a signed support letter on company letterhead specifying your job title, triage-specific duties, RN credential requirement, and the TN classification being sought. They'll also need a copy of your current U.S. state nursing license or CGFNS certificate. Canadian applicants present these at the border; Mexican applicants submit them as part of the DS-160 consulate package.
Where can I find triage nurse jobs with confirmed TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search triage nurse openings filtered by TN visa sponsorship status, so you're not spending time on applications where immigration support isn't confirmed. Most general job boards don't filter by visa category, which means you often discover sponsorship limitations late in the process, after interviews have already started.
Can I switch triage nurse employers on a TN visa without losing status?
Yes, but you cannot simply transfer your existing TN to a new employer. Each employer change requires a new TN petition with updated documentation reflecting the new role, employer support letter, and your current RN license. Canadian citizens can apply at the border again; Mexican nationals need a new consulate appointment. Working for the new employer before the new TN is approved puts you out of status.
