Verify your licensure transfers across state lines
TN visa approval depends on your credentials matching the role, but U.S. employers also screen for state licensure. Check whether your Canadian or Mexican psychology license qualifies for reciprocity or endorsement in the state where the job is based before applying.
Target employers with structured credentialing pipelines
Hospital systems, federally qualified health centers, and university counseling departments regularly hire foreign-trained psychologists and understand the TN process. These settings are more likely to support your licensing board applications alongside your visa sponsorship paperwork.
Get your credentials evaluated before the offer stage
USCIS requires that your degree qualify as a master's or doctorate in psychology. If your degree was completed outside the U.S. or Canada, get a credential evaluation completed in advance so you're not scrambling when an employer asks for documentation.
Clarify the supervision requirement with your hiring manager
Many psychology roles require supervised hours for full licensure, which can complicate TN status if your job title or duties shift mid-employment. Confirm that your initial TN petition reflects the actual licensed or supervised role you'll be performing from day one.
Search for TN-sponsoring employers using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter psychology job listings by employers that have TN visa sponsorship history. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to roles where sponsorship is uncertain, especially for clinical and licensed psychology positions.
Prepare a role-specific support letter for border entry
Canadian citizens presenting at a port of entry need a support letter from the employer that explicitly ties the psychology position to USMCA's qualifying occupation list. A vague offer letter is one of the most common reasons TN applications are questioned at the border.
Psychology TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a psychology role actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, psychologist is a named occupation on the USMCA TN list. The position must require a state license and a master's or doctoral degree in psychology. Roles like counselor, therapist, or social worker often do not qualify under the psychology category, so the job title and duties in the offer letter need to match the USMCA definition precisely.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for psychologists?
The TN visa is typically faster and more predictable for Canadian psychologists because there's no lottery and no annual cap. Canadians can receive TN status at a port of entry the same day. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance and selection through a random lottery. For Mexican psychologists, the TN still requires a consular appointment but avoids the H-1B lottery entirely.
Can I work as a licensed psychologist on a TN visa across multiple states?
Your TN petition is tied to a specific employer and role, not a specific state. You can relocate with the same employer without a new TN petition, but you'll need to obtain licensure in each new state independently. Psychology licensure portability in the U.S. is limited, so check reciprocity agreements between states before accepting a role that might involve relocation.
Where can I find psychology jobs that specifically offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search psychology job listings filtered by TN visa sponsorship, so you're only seeing employers who have already indicated willingness to sponsor. This is more efficient than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after the fact, which often results in wasted applications at organizations without TN experience.
What documents does a Canadian psychologist need when applying for TN status at the border?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, an employer support letter that describes the psychology role and ties it to the USMCA occupation list, proof of your master's or doctoral degree in psychology, and evidence of your state license or eligibility for licensure. USCIS does not process TN applications in advance for Canadians, so the CBP officer at the port of entry makes the determination on the spot.
