Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
Verify your NCLEX and state license first
TN visa classification for nurse practitioners requires a valid U.S. state license, not just a Canadian or Mexican nursing credential. Start the licensing process in your target state before applying to roles, since employers won't file without it.
Target hospital systems with established NP programs
Acute care NP roles at large health systems and academic medical centers are far more likely to have HR teams familiar with TN sponsorship than community clinics or private practices. Focus your search on institutions with dedicated international hiring infrastructure.
Search TN-sponsored ACNP roles through Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa sponsorship type, so you can find employers actively hiring acute care nurse practitioners under TN status without sorting through roles that only support H-1B visa or no sponsorship at all.
Clarify the offer letter specifies your ACNP scope
Your employer's TN support letter must describe your role in terms matching the Nurse category definition. An offer letter that lists general nursing duties instead of advanced practice responsibilities can cause a CBP denial at the border, even with valid credentials.
Ask whether the employer uses a TN or H-1B default
Some health systems default to H-1B petitions for advanced practice nurses without realizing TN is faster and cap-exempt for Canadians. Raise TN sponsorship explicitly during the offer stage so HR can route your case correctly from the start.
Prepare for Mexican TN consular processing timelines
Mexican citizens must apply at a U.S. consulate rather than at the border, which adds weeks to the process. Factor consulate appointment availability into your start date negotiation so your employer isn't holding a position through an unexpectedly long wait.
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the TN visa cover Acute Care Nurse Practitioners specifically?
Yes, but the TN visa classifies the role under the Nurse category, not a distinct ACNP designation. Your qualifying credentials must demonstrate advanced practice licensure in your target U.S. state. CBP officers look at the offered job duties and your active state license to confirm the fit, so the offer letter's description of your scope of practice matters significantly.
How does TN compare to H-1B for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner?
TN is faster and more predictable for Canadian citizens because there's no lottery, no annual cap, and Canadians can receive approval at the port of entry the same day. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance, goes through a random lottery, and involves USCIS processing that can stretch past six months. For Mexicans, TN requires consular processing but still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely.
Can I switch ACNP employers while on TN status?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to the original sponsoring employer. You'll need a new TN approval before starting with a new employer, either through a fresh border crossing as a Canadian or a new consular application as a Mexican citizen. Working for the new employer before the new TN is approved puts you out of status.
Where can I find Acute Care Nurse Practitioner jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface jobs by sponsorship type, so you can filter for ACNP roles where the employer is already prepared to support TN filings. Most general job boards don't distinguish between visa types in their listings, which means you end up contacting employers only to learn they don't sponsor TN or expect you to self-petition.
What documents do I need to bring to a Canadian border crossing for TN approval as an ACNP?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, a detailed support letter from your U.S. employer describing the role and its alignment with the Nurse category, proof of your advanced practice licensure in the destination state, and your academic credentials confirming your nursing degree. CBP officers may also ask for your NCLEX results. Bring originals and copies of everything.
