Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Critical Care Physician
Verify your medical credentials meet TN requirements
TN visa classification for physicians requires a valid medical degree and an unrestricted U.S. state medical license. Confirm your ECFMG certification and any board credentials are current before approaching employers, since incomplete licensure will block TN approval.
Target hospitals with active ICU staffing needs
Academic medical centers, level-one trauma centers, and large regional hospitals with high ICU bed counts file TN sponsorship most consistently. Filter your search to facilities that have existing critical care departments rather than generalist practices building new programs.
Search TN-sponsored critical care roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate surfaces Critical Care Physician openings filtered by TN visa sponsorship, so you can skip outreach to employers who haven't navigated physician immigration before. Use it to identify which health systems are actively hiring under USMCA.
Get the employer offer letter details right
Your TN support letter must specify your exact job title, duties confirming specialty occupation status, your degree field, employment start date, and compensation terms. Vague or generic letters are the leading cause of CBP requests for additional documentation at the port of entry.
Clarify your state license scope before filing
TN approval does not guarantee you can practice in the state where the hospital is located. Some states require a separate licensing step for foreign-trained physicians. Confirm your license covers the specific facility and any affiliated satellite locations before the offer is finalized.
Plan for Mexican TN processing timelines at consulates
Mexican nationals apply for a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate, which requires scheduling an appointment that can run several weeks out. Build this window into your start date negotiation with the employer so the offer doesn't expire before your visa is issued.
Critical Care Physician TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Critical Care Physician qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Physicians qualify for TN status under the USMCA professional list when the role involves direct patient care in a specialty setting, such as an ICU or NICU. You'll need a qualifying medical degree, an unrestricted U.S. state medical license, and a detailed offer letter from a U.S. employer confirming your specialist duties.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for critical care physicians?
The TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at the border or a consulate without USCIS petitioning, which makes it far faster to activate than an H-1B visa. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through USCIS and a successful lottery draw. For Canadian intensivists with a firm offer, TN is typically the more direct route to starting work.
Can a Canadian physician apply for TN status at the border without pre-approval?
Yes. Canadian citizens can present their TN documentation directly to CBP at a land border crossing or preclearance location without filing with USCIS in advance. You'll need your medical degree, state license, and employer offer letter. CBP adjudicates TN requests on the spot, and most decisions are made the same day.
Where can I find Critical Care Physician jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking TN-sponsored roles in the U.S. You can search Critical Care Physician openings filtered by visa sponsorship, which narrows results to employers already prepared to support TN documentation rather than those unfamiliar with USMCA hiring.
What happens to my TN status if my hospital employment ends?
Your TN status is tied to the specific employer listed in your approval. If employment ends, you lose TN authorization for that role. You can apply for a new TN with a different employer, but you cannot work during the gap. Canadian physicians can file a new TN at the border quickly, while Mexican nationals must schedule a new consulate appointment.
